What happened to Bikepedia?

That site is ruined. It's been "modernized", but it only has a fraction of the bikes in the database now. My '94 Diamondback Axis TR is no longer there. My modern bike is a 2011 Focus Culebro, and that brand is not even on the site anymore.

Yeah, I noticed issues too. Hopefully they are still in the process of restoring all the database info....

Anyone use the 99Spokes site instead? It is way more comprehensive than Bikepedia and with a lot of features like comparison tools to evaluate several bikes at once.

I've never seen it before, but it's been popping up A LOT lately in my recent google searches for older bikes and parts. Is it relatively new?

Bikepedia was always pretty weird. It did not seem like a labor of love like Velobase for example. More like an unsuccessful attempt to leverage some very old info to sell ads to a very narrow subset of people. No idea why it went away or who brought it back.

Now they are trying to have a valuation function. The one Bicycle Blue Book uses is just standard depreciation and so it's just not that popular for bike dorks who all want to believe their old thing that was expensive once is still special now. BBB also had a sales aspect which seems a lot more like a money maker but I seem to recall it was part of Performance / Nashbar and I haven't checked what's become of it since.

Sites get bought and sold too. Some times a site creator would rather have short term cash from selling their site than the long term revenue that just barely covered the expenses and time they put into the site.

Don't know if this is the case for bikepedia.

I had another favorite site pull the plug the other day. It's creator and owner had sold it long ago. I guess the new owners weren't getting enough dollars from advertising to make it worth keeping it going due to the slowing traffic at the site and decided to cut their losses. Maybe they owned bikepedia too.

The DB is still there. I've been getting a warning on the site for a month or so though, but I'm not skeered.

I never heard of 99Spokes, so I went to check them out. Klein doesn't exist on 99Spokes. 😢

You can request they add them. I've caught a couple of misses myself but haven't actually tested how good their response to update requests are. If it's anything like Google Maps or Garmin ... still, pretty cool site, no?

I don't even know how I came upon them. I've not checked into how long they've been around.
