I am going to put an adjustable stem on my road bike with straight bars.Should I order the 31.8 or the 25.4? The reason I ask is that it seems like all the cool handle bars in the US are 31.8. Thoughts?

31.8 is the mainstream standard. Buy that for the greatest selection.

I would pick the bars you want to use, and then buy whatever stem fit that.

Get the 31.8, you can always shim is down if you get the smaller size handlebars

+1, Even if the bars you find are 1", with a 31.8mm stem there are shims to use them in it..

25.4 is dead. The only reason to buy anything 25.4 is if you already have something that size. If starting fresh, go 31.8.
