As to the rest, I live in the real world, not TV land. Rallying a group of friends, hiring security, staking out the thieves joint, is far more likely to land me in legal trouble than it is to recover my goods. Sure, you can probably find some anecdotal evidence where it panned out, just as I am sure I can find some where it ended badly for the person. In fact, just ask OJ Simpson about that...
Probably true. And you might also end up on the wrong end of a violent confrontation.

We went to get my bike back and we did ... sucks for my three friends that are in jail for manslaughter, aggravated assault, and assault with a deadly weapon. See ya ... I gotta go ride.

I would ask the police for assistant first. If they are too busy go with a group of friends not to beat them up or anything, but for safety in numbers/intimation. Arm yourself with video cameras. Proceed with asking politely for the return of the bike. If they refused, call the police to report a crime in progress. If they started something physical first, it would be self defense and on video. But, ideally best to get law enforcement to recover.
