Thanks! Yep, The Price Is Right and I'm definitely leaning that way. Fastroad is just little more of a road bike, thinner tires, 52-tooth crankset.

I'm $400-700 depending on the deal. Just makes me nervous to have over a grand dangling out behind my car. :-)

there was a FastRoad on Craigslist near Atlanta, but I missed it. Is there any other kind of individual used bike website?

Whichever Trek FX is at that price point.

We have both bikes in our house - I love my Fastroad - great bike ! The Sirrus we have is also a great bike - very light in weight. Not as smooth a ride as the Fastroad but still a very good bike for the $$. HTH !!

Wow!
Now I like this bike too. Do you think with a 38 tooth crank it would top out quickly?

Maybe I could get second job. lol.

It seems like you have to spend close to 1000 to get a named gear set. The specialized Sirrus entry uses Tourney, which isnt even on most hierarchy charts.. The fastroad only has Tigra.

Bikes direct has named geaar sets, but those bikes are almost a grand with no resale value.. :-/
I'm thinking craigslist is the way to go for best deal.. There is a Zektor 2 there- full claris gear set...

I just want to shifting to be smooth while I am standing up on it pedaling hills..

Quite often with a max speed of 26 mph at 90 rpm, assuming a 11-36 cassette.

There are some good deals to be had buying used if you know what you're doing and what you're looking for. You just have to be patient.

has anyone here ever tried building their own bike?

Yes.

I wouldn't recommend it to a beginner.

You'll end up paying more than you would just buying a bike, or you'll take so long if you are penny pinching and looking for deals that you'll miss out on actually using it for fitness for a while.

Also, worrying about resale value on any sub-$1000 bike is silly. Anything in that range is going to be worth far less the moment you try to sell it. That said, that works both ways, maybe take a look at the used market. See if there is any LBS by you that takes bikes in on trade and refurbs and sells them.
