Favorite Brands?

Hey everybody,

I was curious which brands people like and for which purposes.

Like the bike store I work sells these: Connex, Effetto Mariposa, Hermanns, some Axa, etc., and I guess pretty soon something called DDK saddles.

I NEVER get to hear opinions outside my work environment on these brands, so of course I hear that they are all really great.

However, what do you guys think?

Like do you like bike chains from another brand than say Connex better?

If I had to boil down my favorite brand, to one brand, it would be Santini clothing. I have three of their jersey's, two bibs and a pair of shorts. All super quality made in Italy, stylish, super functional, priced right with three different fits available (race fit to leisure fit). In other words an Italian jersey that fits ordinary people remarkably well!

Other favorites:
Wabi bikes - The ride is addictive for these modern steel creations
Squirt chain lube - best I have found bar none
Yokozuna brake cables - totally badass looking and function really well
Challenge open tubular tires - Sensational ride, puncture-resistant (even on Arizona's thorn-infested roads)
Brooks saddles and leather handlebar tape - Great comfort (saddles) and great hand-feel and beautiful to look at (tape)

Effetto Mariposa is solid. I use their torque wrench almost daily. One of my favorite tools.

DDK might be something. Just read an article on them. Strong in Germany, apparently. Opening a second factory.

Sram - Chains, Bar Tape, Rear Cassettes, CO2 inflator [same design as Genuine Innovation Microflate]
Shimano - Shifters, Rear Derailleurs, Bottom Brackets
FSA - Cranksets and Chainrings [Usually because they are cheaper]

Funny that when i googled the first two brands, Connex and Effetto Mariposa, your company's website was in the top 3 results for both brands.
Huh.

To play along though- yep, i like chains other than Connex...since i hadnt heard of that brand until right now. Wipperman I have heard of, but its always in the context of C&V.

I like SRAM. Or KMC. Really whatever is fine as long as it has a quicklink and not Shimano's dumb pin thing. So that Connex would be cool...if it werent more expensive.

Kudos on the subtle push towards your company's products since your company apparently is the importer of Connex, Effetto Mariposa and Hermans products.

I decide a product individually based on objectivity. Not based on brand. A brand might make a awesome X product but a so-so Y product. You cannot assume a brand is just awesome. Buying something because of a brand is just laziness. Do your research thoroughly, regardless of brand.

Haha, that's good to know! I'm trying to get our site higher in the SEO stuff because currently we fall victim under the dreaded shadow of 'Amazon' who milks 30%+ of our profits. It'd be great if we can get more people ordering over our site than Amazon, but I think a lot of small businesses face this problem....

That's something I think about from time to time. Not only do they take 30%, which maybe is fair enough, but then they "own" the customer to boot. Right? Or does Amazon pass the orders on to you to fulfill? I bet they also demand "most favored nation" pricing.

For transportation and daily use: Workcycles, Azor, Batavus, Brooks, Selle, NuVinci, Schwalbe, Sturmey-Archer. Shimano?

Road: Scott, BMC, Fizik, Shimano, Sram, Gatorskins, Powertap, Garmin ... The differentiation I see here between most brands seems mostly personal preference. I tend to like Scott & BMC frames, others like Trek, Bianchi or others, but I think they're largely similar quality and performance so it's what fits you best. I like Fizik saddles, others not.

Tools: Park.
