I just went through this.. my biggest mistake was not really knowing what i was doing. I bought a Cannondale CAAD8 with the 105 group set. Bike is/was fantastic, except the gearing was nowhere near what i needed for my level of fitness. The stem was down so I had to flip that, not a big deal but the gearing was the eye opener. In my area the hills are big and using a 52/39 ring set with a 11-25 on the back was brutal. I even dropped some money on it and changed out the cassette and RD. I ended up doing just what some earlier comments said. I rode it for 2 months and put 3-4 hundred miles on it. Then I knew I did not necessarily need a race geometry frame with that kind of gearing. I ended selling it and buying a Cannondale Synapse with a compact ring set and an 11-32 on the back. (actually not sure about the 11 part but the 32 for sure) It has made a world of difference in my enjoyment on the bike, The geometry is much better for my 52 year old body and the gearing has made it so Im not doing the dreaded dismount up the steep hills.
So my advice is buy used if possible but maybe get a good bike fit so you know what you should be looking for, then you can go out in to the world with a good understanding of what you need. Good luck!

@francov, you wrote an excellent post to some one who bought a bike almost a year ago.

I would definitely recommend a Synapse-sort of endurance-frame bike as a first road bike for most people, and a compact crank/11-32 unless they live in Flatlandia. However, the OP won't be taking that advice as he likely made his choice nine months ago.

Impossible too answer .all i could say is start with an 80s road bike 700c wheels . then learn to upgrade its old parts to more modern getting more mechanical advatage as you ride more . at some point you can then jump to modern aluminum , then up to carbon as your understanding of your needs and tasks increases.

Unfortunately when they updated the BF software the original post date quit showing up in the thread header and they have not seen fit to restore that feature. This brings up lots of zombie threads lately.

It is amazing what you can get used. I recently bought a Giant TCR Advanced. Ultegra 6700, Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheel upgrade. Ridden 134 miles.
$1000. Yea, it's only 10 speed. I can live with that.

Shop used. This time of year is great for deals.

Well, since we're here ..........I've been drooling over lots of killer deals on ebay lately. Obviously, not being able to visually inspect and ride the bike, as you would from a Craigslist sale, is a concern, but some careful vetting of the seller usually works well. I've seen titanium Lynskeys, etc with 105 for $1500-1800, and some with Ultegra and Da for not that much more.
But, I am a fan of Craigslist. A clean,low-miles 105-equipped Fuji fell in my lap a few months ago, for $350. The nearly identical 2018 model now retails for $1500, and is on sale for $1200. The only downside to CL is that you gotta check it constantly, and you might wait a while for something ideal to pop up.

I second this.
A perennial favorite that is well regarded by almost everyone and appeals to a brand new rider or old pro.

I saw several $1500 bikes that fit the description. The one I bought was $1000.

But did you buy it from a zombie troll?

it is prejudicial and unfair, the way we keep them out of the economy.
