Are there any decent cycling pants available that aren't tights. I'm new to cycling and can't quite get myself to wear tights in public yet. I'm looking for something quiet (not nylon) that I'll wear commuting on a road bike to work. Any suggestions would be good.

I wear Pearl Izumi Tokyo Tights over cycling shorts but this is only in winter. But I would think they'd work for what you want to do. They're loose fitting and are more like pants rather than tights as the name implies. I got mine on sale thru Performance for $50.00 but this was quite a while ago. I can't even find them on Performance's website anymore. Here's a link to Pearl Izumi's listing for them...

Keep in mind, these are not padded. They're made to wear over padded shorts or tights.

Polycotton hiking pants work well. I use std metal trouser clips to stop the ends from flapping into the chain.
Rivendell do some with built-in velcro closure

They make bike shorts that look like regular shorts, not the tight nylon/lycra types, but they are still padded on the inside (which is what makes them "biking" shorts).

Here's a few of each (men and women...don't know if you are male or female) examples:

I have a pair of Liquicells from Bike Nashbar that look just like regular shorts but have a liner in them. They seem to be more comfortable than tights and look better.

Pants or tights in the summer???

Choice 1: Wear bibs.
Choice 2: Baggy mtn bike style shorts.

That, or you can just wrap child's size Livestrong band around your pant cuff.

Breathable short pants are good for the warm weather.
Lotsa those out there. My company just provided me with several pair of high tech Louis Garneau with the company logo/name on em or I'd still be wearing my 3/4 length pants. All week people have been reading the website name stretched taut across my ass while I'm riding, walking etc. That's what I tell myself...they just want to copy down the website, or memorize it or something

For the record, I'm nearly 350 pounds and have no issue with tights in public. They are very comfortable for riding in and don't look as bad as you think.
