Newbie choosing a bike

I work on a flat college campus. I was thinking of occasionally going around the city (flats and hills).

I'm a 5'2" woman (15-16" frames) and I'm open to road bikes & hybrids. The bike would be stored in my 2nd-floor, office overnight.

Should I go for:

- A new 2016 Trek Fx Hybrid Bike:

- A used 2010 Jamis Coda Femme 16"

- A used unknown-year Jamis Coda 16"

Thanks in Advance!

Hello! The used 2010 Coda Femme 16" is $200 & the unknown-year Coda 16" is $280 including fenders and back rack. I would post links but bikeforums won't let me until after posting 10 threads.

Between the two used ones, assuming they are similar years, it's a toss-up. For $200, it's not a bad buy for an eight year-old bike with initial MSRP of about $600. Installing a rack and fenders on it might end up costing you $80 anyway.

It's a decent bike for commuting.

You should check the year of the unknown one. All things being, if you're riding under wet conditions I'd be inclined to pick the one with the fenders...but they are easy enough to install if you find the first one in better condition or newer.

If either of the Codas fit, and if they are in clean, ready to ride shape, either would be a fine choice. If they have been ridden hard, or were neglected, and need some work, then I would negotiate a lower price. But that said, a Jamis Coda from 2010 was and is a fine bicycle.

Thank you everyone for your feedback! It looks like the Codas are a reliable line. The used Coda femme is going for $200 while the unknown year Coda with fenders and bike rack is going for $280.

Thing is, I'll see the fendered, black Coda tomorrow and I have a strange feeling about the owner. The owner didn't provide a name and wants to meet a McDonalds or one of our major transit stations. It's somewhat suspicious, even the year isn't listed and I couldn't find a record of a 16" non-women frame-size Coda...

The Coda femme will be at a person's house.

I believe trek has lifetime warranty. Make sure everything feels right. bike fitting is most important 😉

All else being equal, $80 extra for fenders and a rack would be a much better deal for me, since I always add those to my bikes, with the local shop doing the installation. I probably spend $150 by the time I'm done, not including all the extra stuff I end up buying while shopping around as they do the work. And yes, I got some grief from them over putting a rack & Axiom bags on my Specialized Allez.

Maybe she's just being safe? When I purchased my last (used) bike, I met the seller at bus station. Turned out to be a non-issue, but better safe than sorry. (I had a wallet full of cash.)

I also have met people at public places for Craigslist sales ... they don't always want people to know where they live and I don't always know if I want to bring a bag of cash to some stranger's house.

That said ... Fit and Condition trump the value of the fenders and rack. Fenders on a brokedown bike are scrap on scrap. Buy whichever seems to be best maintained, i'd say.

Meeting in public spots is pretty common on craigslist sales.

Limited lifetime warranty on frame only for original owner, with exclusions for accident, abuse, and wear and tear. But chances are, if you buy a used bike and the frame is in good shape, it should last many more years.
