When Bike Shops Take Long To Get Your Order In
I don't know how long most bike shops take to get bikes in when orders are placed.. But Amazon has spoiled me Rotten..
Last Monday, I made an Order for the Giant Toughroad SLR2 and thought it would be in by Friday.. Nope.. Sat? Nope.. Sunday? Nope.. UUGGHHH!!!
I am not really blaming the shop.. I know they place their orders and the bikes come in when they do.. so.. yes.. I am Just Whining.
In your experience when a shop doesn't have your bike in stock, how long do you normally wait?

It took a little over a month to receive the only bike I bought new. They did call it a preorder when I ordered though.

At the very least, I would expect the LBS to give me an estimate of how long it will take. For the 3 bikes are ordered, they were able to confirm it was in stock in Specialized's own warehouse, so they were able to give me an estimate of 1 to 1 and a half week for delivery to the shop, plus usually a day to put it together.
I'd be wary if they can't provide any timeline at all, in which case I would consider buying from another shop.

Only ordering parts thru a lbs, i've experienced waiting 2 months. Knowing what I know now, I'll order my parts online, or if requiring a bike shop, still order via electronically than going inside a B&M estab.
If I had to wait that long for a bike, I'd try other means.

The lure of free shipping.
Bike shops succumb to it too. I suspect that your dealer wants to package your order with enough additional bikes to get the best price and free shipping.

While I know it's not ordering from an LBS, I bought a bike from Competitive Cyclist a couple of years ago. I made a number of changes to the bike, so they built it and had it at my door in 5 days.

My recent experience with Amazon hasn't been so great. What good is overnight shipping when they don't ship it for 10 days?
Re: bikes, Sheldon Brown (RIP) got me one within a week. The custom took a lot longer -- was it 6 or 8 months?

Never ordered a bike through the LBS because I've always bought used, but I think in large part that's dependent on supply from the MFG and out of their hands.
Parts -- My LBS does orders on Tuesday and will have the parts in by Thursday (with a couple of exceptions for certain boutique vendors.) So if you order something on Friday, you won't get it until the following Thursday, but if you order on Tuesday, you will also get it on that same Thursday.
1. For most items, when I factor in the cost of shipping, the LBS price is comparable.
2. When I do order online, I rarely order from Amazon because their prices and availability are rarely as good as Jenson, Niagra, ModernBike, etc.
3. Amazon Prime's 2-day shipping is often more than 2 days. It's usually only 2 days if you order by Tuesday; and sometimes they don't fill the order and ship it for a day or two after you order it, so I have had frequent instances where 2 = 5 in Amazon math.
4. Of course, buying certain parts from the UK saves a lot of money. But the trade-off is slow shipping. (Still waiting on some winter bibs I ordered 2+ weeks ago.)
In conclusion, I've found for that most of the time ordering from the LBS is roughly equal to ordering online in both terms of cost and delivery, with the exception of the UK vendors.
But my shop, I think, is better than some with orders. YMMV.

Sunday ?. Do you really expect a bike to arrive on Sunday ?. At an LBS ?, or Saturday even ?. What shop is paying for a Sat. delivery from UPS ?, which is the likely carrier.
As a bit of a reality check and yes I know you stated you where whining.
I understand Amazon spoils us, given that that have warehouses all over. But the bike isn't coming from Amazon and I doubt even if you ordered it from Amazon, it would be coming from some other vendor and I've had other-than-Amazon vendors take 2 weeks to ship.
Likely the shop placed the order on Tuesday. Giant, which probably has one warehouse in California or such, shipped on Wed. Thus with 5 day standard ground, it's not at the shop till the following Wed.
The internet shopping experience has been a ***** for a lot of companies, as well as created unfortunate expectations on the buyers.
