Kestrel bike

I am searching for a bike upgrade. I currently have a Trek hybrid fx 7.3. I want a carbon fiber and Ultegra components. My budget is $1,500. What are your thoughts on 2017 Kestrel Talon Ultegra LE road bike? Pros and Cons?

IMO, Kestrel offers real bang for the buck. I bought a 2016 RT1000 with 105 (crank FSA) for just over $1500 including shipping from Nashbar. Pleased with it.

You are going from a Trek all rounder to a race geometry carbon road bike (the Talon). The difference is pretty stark. The reason I went with the RT1000 was due to it's more upright riding position. You might take a look at that one. The 2017 model goes for around $1700 with full 105, I believe there is an Ultegra version as well. They still have 2016's in stock.

I have been riding a 2016 Kestrel RT1000 w/ 105 group set mixed w/ Oval for 8,000 miles. I then upgraded to Ultegra 6800 and have about 4,000 miles on the newer group set. The RT1000 has a more relaxed geometry than the Talon. It is comfortable on century rides and great for climbing.

No problems with the frame even after a few crashes. Definitely test ride both to compare fit/position with the type of riding you do. I passed on the Talon because it is designed for speed and I am more into grand fondo type rides.

Was your original Oval/ 105 stuff worn out when you decided to upgrade? Did you notice much difference afterwards in shifting, drivetrain noise, ect? Did you hang on to the original Oval wheels?

Sorry about all the questions, I just don't see many fellow Kestrel owners around here.

No argument here. Unfortunately many sizes have been "sold-out" since September...definitely the 60 & 62 sizes in both colors...I know, I tried. And these are all "pre-orders" with shipping scheduled for January! Maybe they will restock next year sometime.

I wore out or damaged the 105/Oval components. The full Ultegra drivetrain upgrade is more precise and the brakes are off the charts better. Be aware of the cheaper Oval components like the crank, wheelset and generic brakes on the Kestrel.

You might be better off looking at another brand or investigating what exactly is included with a Kestrel marketed with Ultegra components. For example, does it include an Ultegra wheelset? I kept the Oval wheelset for now; this will be my next upgrade. Other planned upgrades will include carbon drop bars and a better saddle.

Overall, I like the bike as an entry level carbon endurance bike. I use it for weekend centuries. At 53 y.o. with lower back arthritis, it is comfortable for longer rides.

I've been rolling on a Kestrel rt900sl since 2010 and love every mile with it. My old riding partner had a Talon and had no complaints.

I had a 2015 talon that was a really nice bike for the money. I'd still have it, but it was just too large of a frame.

Kestrel - is ASI still a company producing Kestrel & Fuji bikes?

I have been looking for a 2019 54cm Kestrel RT-1100 Ultegra. It appears that no one in the nation has one, and when I call ASI, they won't provide any information as to when they will resume producing bikes and tell me I should talk with my local bike dealer. The issue is that most local bike dealers that sold Kestrel and/or Fuji have gone out of business with the exception of Sun & Ski, and anyone that says that they are a Kestrel dealer, don't have any in stock and don't know anything about future production or availability of Kestrel bikes. On line companies advertise that they have these bikes but none of them really do (other than maybe one really small version or one bike with dura ace DI components). Does anyone know if Kestrel is still a viable bike company or if it has decided to fold up shop and go in a different direction?
