It's OK... I normally wear padded gloves. I prefer the look of a wrapped bar, but haven't had the time to play around with it.

All bars are awful! In fact all bikes are awful. We should ride unicycles instead, no need for bars, stems, brake levers, shifters or toptubes!

my trekking bar setup- $10 bar extender for the clamps and a piece of 7/8 copper pipe, cheaper than thumbies and puts the shifters right in the middle.
I'd post images but can't

I've always loved the idea of trekking bars for touring as is common in Europe, even though I also enjoy our own culture of using drop bars for the same. I have some nice dropbars with flared drops, super comfortable. Ride whatever makes you happy, but ride.

This. To each his own.

My stepfather bought a bike for my Mom. It was his dream to ride the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage in Galicia. He's Roman Catholic, my Mom is Methodist. He's a biking enthusiast who commuted to work at the State Department in the 80s on a recumbent he built himself (an Easy Racer, build from Chrome-Moly - he did a terrific job). Mom is... neither a gear-head, nor so much athletically inclined. Step-dad proceeded with plans. So they got to in Spain, and started. Mom hated it. The hills were too much, the seat hurt her heinie. Couldn't do it. So they sent the bikes back and walked some of the thing and bussed the rest. So point one is: don't let your enthusiasms (or antipathies) keep you from understanding the other person's view.

In any case, the bike hung in our garage from about 1996 til last year. Mom gave it to my wife. It had trekking bars. She hated them. I'm not a big fan. But fietsbob has posted a lot of thoughtful things here that I've learned from. So point two is: just because others like, or market, or hate a specific technical approach does not mean you have to like it, or to buy it, or to dislike it.

The trekking bars made my wife's hands really hurt (carpal tunnel, she thinks, and she's a Physical Therapist, so I suspect she's spot on). But that's for her hands. I got her fairly straight bars and put Ergon handles and bar-ends on them, and she likes that set-up much better. But I suspect that there's some folks whose hands hurt with straight bars and for whom trekking bars saved the day.

Not ever technical innovation is a good one, even from "primo" manufacturers. Campagnolo Delta brakes, for example.

working out well for me on this bike.
But, I'm old, the bike is old, and I probably don't know enough to know better

Nice bike - a buddy had one when I was a kid, I admired it greatly. I rode a 'precision' bike.

I asked my trekking bars a series of simple questions about history, math, and geography ... the bars couldn't answer a one of them---they couldn't even guess.

Dumbest bars ever.

They are dumb. I played chess against a set of trekking bars, and won 5 games to 2.

Here's some trekking bars on my Krampus. Not the brightest set of bars ever, I admit. Highly functional though.

I put a set on an old Trek 930. They work fine. My only “complaint” was that they were wider than the drop bars I use on just about everything else. But that was a small thing.

Seeing the bikes on this thread makes me want to build a bike with a set of taking bars! Some nice looking bars on this thread.

Yeah, you’re wrong. As soon as I get around to it, a disc trucker with trekking bars is on the menu. If you don’t have three good hand positions with them (at least), you’ve set them up wrong.

Since this turned into a show-off-your-trekking-bars thread, here are the ones that have been torturing me senseless. I really can't stand all the hand positions and real estate they offer me. Being able to bring what I need and stay comfortable during long bike rides is really killing me.
