Help a Neanderthal.
I am from an era before the PC appeared.
I want to put my aluminium Trek 2.3 (no built-in anything) in a trainer and
be able to use Rouvy as I pedal away the snow season (5-7 months).
I am willing to spend some bucks.
This is a guess. I need:
bike -- have a Trek 2.3 aluminium
Bluetooth device of some sort (cadence/speed) on bike?
trainer -- have a dumb Kinetic Road Machine
Cheap tablet?
TV -- has Bluetooth
What, how, etc.
ALL advice gladly accepted. Be as detailed as you can. Cost is not a big item.
That is, walk the Neanderthal through the process from purchase to set-up to enjoyment.

So this Rouvy looks similar to other indoor apps (real close to Ful Gaz). Looks pretty good.
Anyways, there are alot of different ways to run these types of programs, probably as many as there are programs, but my set-up is:
Plain old bike (10sp Cervelo P2),
Wahoo cadence sensor on the left crank (transmits in both Bluetooth and ANT+),
Wahoo Tickr X HR monitor (also has BT and ANT),
Wahoo Kickr (also has BT and ANT).
When just riding in the virtual programs I use (Zwift and Ful Gaz) I run everything either completely through an old Windows 7 PC using ANT+, or completely through an iPad Air using Bluetooth.
When training with TrainerRoad, I mix both. I control the trainer with my iPad running the TR workout via BT, and use the PC to send all metric data to Zwift via ANT.
Edit: I forgot to add...about the TV. If I use it which is rare, I use an old flatscreen TV with an HDMI cable, which either plugs directly into the PC, or with a little converter cable for the iPad.

I'm in the same position as the PO, except that I made my living in computers and tech, so I'm fairly comfortable there. I have a bike with a garmin cadence/speed sensor that uses ant+. I've just ordered an ant+ dongle to plug into my laptop. This laptop (win10) isn't anything to brag about, so the graphic capabilities are limited. I'll give it a try to see if it will work. I don't plan to use a TV as a display, so the graphics may be usable on the laptop screen. Not optimal, I know, but may be enough to see how it all works. And finally, I have a kk road machine dumb trainer.
If I've read and understood everything, this will get me going. I won't have power with this setup, but if I'm happy with the way it all works, I may splurge on a smart trainer down the road (ha).
If I've missed something, please let me know. I'd appreciate that.

A couple of extra tidbits:
1. A lot of TVs come with a VGA input; so you may be able to use VGA in case your PC doesn't have HDMI. Using VGA would mean getting a VGA splitter and an extra VGA cable, with one cable going to your monitor and one to your TV. If not, basic video cards with HDMI output are not terribly expensive.
2. for the PC to receive Ant+, you'll need a Ant+ dongle that plugs into a USB port.

I am willing to spend some bucks.
On a long Bike commute 30 years ago I got books on tape checked out from the library.
those entertained me during the Hour on the road at 1800, when most people were off the road with their suppers and TV.
Tried the home shopping network ?
