Bicycle Seatbelt Future

I see some older footage of the TDF and I have to laugh at those ballsy guys descending hills without helmets. I think in the future people are less tolerant of preventable human injury.:)

Nice head protection (I think), but what do you do with your arms, besides maybe getting them sheared off in a crash?

Here is the article
Keep in mind that this is London where busses run people over all day long.

Looks like it should be a trike so you can park it easier and it doesn't fall over. Looks like the starting would take some practice to get to speed before you fall over. Like a 2-wheeled recumbent as opposed to 3-wheel. With the expected weight the e-bike version may be a good city commuter. Especially since being that enclosed and more weight makes you sweat more.

Like father, like son... it's his turn to invent a bike nobody wants.

A bit of Déjà vu, I'm sure this has been posted before.

I'd like to see some crash-test dummy tests.

I can't say, but I could imagine some nasty hyper-extension breaks of the elbows as the arms are pulled out, and then the upper arms hit the roll cage.

Will we see these as "City Bike Rentals"? Or will they be too difficult to ride?

Found the previous post from 2015.

Apparently the Indiegogo campaign fell short of expectations.

There is a website:

But, I can't tell if they're actually building the things, or it is still in "concept phase". I find it odd that the publicity/promo video shows a rider riding an early prototype, not the more finished prototype shown in all the other images.

That roll cage might protect your head & torso, but say goodbye to your limbs if you actually get into a sever(e) crash in that thing.

I'd suggest using them to steer, steering prevents far more injuries than any protection.

Pray?

Bent with 2 different size tires, lol.

dabac 02-02-18 12:50 PM

How does it work?
I see the crank, i see the rear wheel, but what transfers the power?

AlmostTrick 02-02-18 12:56 PM

Chains inside the frame. Additional sprockets at the frame joint behind the seat.

Hoopdriver 02-04-18 05:18 PM

Put another wheel up front and lower the seating position and they may have something.

Ah, thanks.
Looks like a fairly small sprocket then.

It would be, but by putting in the idler, they could easily double the gearing by putting say a 11/22 in the idler. So, a 25T up front becomes equivalent to a 50T.

They probably decided they wanted the rider high for visibility, and so that one could simply put one's feet down to the ground. I suppose the angled seat mount also lowers the seat as one shortens the distance between seat and pedals... one size fits all.

However, I think the idler config adds unnecessary complexity, and I probably would have chosen a straight chainline, or perhaps even a shaft drive.

In a world where the 15 - 40 lbs must coexist with 4000 - 80,000 lbs I think I would rather trust wits and evasive maneuvering than to be drop kicked into oblivion. But to each is own.

indyfabz 02-05-18 08:44 AM

Too hard to pop a wheelie so it will never sell.

rydabent 02-05-18 12:24 PM

Per the title about seat belts, occasionally when I set in the seat of my bents, I get a flash feeling I need to put on my seat belt. I wear them all the time in the car.
