IMHO: Earbuds are totally irresponsible. I recall yelling on "on your left", only to have a startled guy veer me into traffic...he couldn't hear me because of his earbuds....he ended up taking out 4 fellows in they're newbie paceline.

While I am against earbuds/headphones while riding in a group, I find zero percent of that story believable on any level. So... cool story, bro.

While I don't disbelieve you're story... I'm 100% AGAINST calling out "on your left" as I've seen too many pedestrians NOT wearing earbuds veer left right in front of me simply because they DID hear me and mis-understood "on your left" meaning "I'm passing on your left" and thinking "please turn left so I can hit you at 20mph and kill you".

(full disclosure, I have never hit, nor killed a pedestrian while on a bike. Not for their lack of trying to trick me into doing it).

I am curious why you included the “while on a bike” qualification.

I wear earbuds. Usually only the right side but sometimes both, depending on where I am riding. I use a mirror too...easier to see what exactly is around me than hear, earbuds or not. The main roads I ride along are basically like highways (extremely loud & busy), so I'm never not hearing a steady stream of speeding vehicles.

I alternate between music and talk radio. Haven't had any close calls.

Again, that's why a bell is handy. Just ring the bell and take the side of the road they move away from. At least that's how I do it with the early morning walkers around here, who often walk three abreast down the middle of the street.

I could see this happening. Just as we have careful cyclists, there are a whole bunch of idiots out there who don't visit this forum, know no real cycling etiquette, and are casually taking a stroll with music, completely oblivious to anything else but his/her music and the bike.
I see them on trails in our local parks.

I like that. Hopefully they move away from wherever they hear the sound. Got myself a Knog Oi for each of my bikes. Beautiful sounding bell and takes up very little space next to my stem.

Those are a neat design but from so many reviews I see that it's not very loud compared to other bells. I bought a cheap Chinese bike bell and it's plenty loud.

I'm guessing "newbie paceline" had far more of an impact on that situation than earphones.

I don't wear them. I like the sounds my bike makes.

Granted, if I am riding my fat bike, it just sounds like a car anyhow...

...Not many pedestrians when/where I ride and when there is I slow down. In fact I stopped announcing my presence to cyclists with ear buds on, seems their in their own world it seems. I just go around them.

Perhaps....... when he veered into traffic, I had visions of going down in front of automobiles on PCH. It was only my extraordinary bike handle skills that saved me.

Bone Conduction Headphones

I actually got a ticket 20 years ago for riding with earbuds on (I'm in California) and didn't ride with headphones/earbuds for years. But I missed listening to music on my commutes so for the past few years, I've been using the Aftershockz bone conducting headphones. The recent versions are great - they're light and flexible and the bluetooth no longer has issues connecting to my iphone. I can hear my music and podcasts clearly and it still allows me to hear the cars (including all the Teslas in the Bay Area) around me as well as other cyclists. If you're riding on city streets and want to listen to your music, these are probably the safest "headphones" to use.

Why, if you were in a paceline, would you yell "on your left"? So...you were passing him on his left in a lane of traffic? And then the guy with earbuds in couldn't hear you (cause he was jamming out to Def Leppard) was startled by the sudden rush of wind that is you motoring by...in a paceline? So your passing another paceline to your right and you yell "on your left" scare a dude who then veers to his left therefore pushing you into traffic....and he almost takes out 4 fellows in a paceline? The same paceline that you were travelling in? Did the four guys that heard you yell "on your left" react? And what happened to you when the earbud guy wrecked the four newbs their paceline (how can you tell they were newbs?) So you successfully dodge four newds and a headphone wearing swerver while travelling in a lane of traffic? Were in a paceline passing this newb paceline?

Yeah...story does not make sense. At. All.
