JMO but I think the FSA Gossamer is one of the better looking modern crank sets. But then again mine is on a bright red bike so there's some contrast.

Sorry, I don't get this thread. The OP does not provide an example of which sort of crank might be visually appealing . There is nothing wrong with the way his/her crank looks as it is. A hint about what sort of visual is wanted would be a big help. Personally, every crankset I have owned since 1973 when I bought my Raleigh Professional were works of art, including the 4 arm Chorus crank I bought last year. Cranksets are purposeful bike components. They are designed for a specific purpose. The only way they can be ugly is if they do not fulfil that purpose

I prefer the look of the Gossamer over the Ultegra. An Anodized chainring in whatever contrasting trim color you have on your bike would make it stand out.

Looks are such a personal preference. How do you expect the internet help you decide what YOU think looks cool?? You didn't even post up a pic of your bike so we can see how uncool it looks already.

Pics needed so everyone can hot or not it.
I agree, most modern cranks look clunky as hell. Old school rules, and those FSA's aren't ugly.

Send those uncool FSA cranks my way. I'll install them onto one of my bikes and bear the shame of uncoolness. I'm sure kids will point and laugh, but they do anyway.

Are you familiar with Michigan Hydrographics in Ypsilanti? They'll provide estimates for things like battery covers and fuse box covers at $30, and NO2 bottles at $100, so maybe cranks wouldn't be too pricey.
But yeah, I'd think plastidip would be the way to go, because it doesn't take any special prep, and doing a contemporary color like a satin grey would be pretty easy and inexpensive; spray cans are like $10.

I put a Shimano crank on my bike to get by when my campy rings wore out and I thought it looked terrible. I put a FSA one on that I had kicking around and I find it ok. Still has a bit of old school look.

I had an FSA chainring that I wanted to use on a cx bike but it had those terrible silver highlights and didn't match me carbon crankset. I washed it with alcohol and spray painted it with flat black rust-oleum. Rattle can sure has come a long way since the last time I used it. Chainring looked pretty good until I did a punch up a limestone ledge and cracked some teeth on it. oops.

Getting off topic here...
Plain old Rustoleum is a great spray paint. Any color or type that comes in the regular traditional white spray can. Anything else Rustoleum like the 2x Ultra cover or different brands like Krylon, store brand etc are not nearly as good. I use a lot of black for things but also Rustoleum of random colors on clearance at Walmart and use for touch up on things that color is not a priority like underneath mower decks, tractor attachments, rototiller, etc.. The legs on my wheelbarrow might be sky blue or some cream color but at least they are solid and not rusty...
