Good To Be Back

After having to shut down the bike season last fall because of some health issues and now an extended winter season here in southern Ontario ready to get back in the saddle!! Hope to hit the Toronto bike show this weekend and maybe snag a new helmet. Thinking of riding some summer charity events this summer too. Raring to go. Good to be back in bike mode

I just browsed the website for the show. Are there really deals to be had there, or is it just so people get into a frenzy thinking they're getting a really good deal when in fact they're not? I've never been, so just asking.

I've never been to it either. Suspect it will be much the same as the boat or auto show though. Manufacturers probably will have all the top end rides there and hopefully some of their entry and mid level bikes. I'm not looking for a bike, but hope some of the vendors have a good selection of gear. As stated, I'd like a new helmet and locals shops and stores have limited selection around home. As long as you have a basic knowledge of what things normally cost you can see if any deals are available. If nothing else for $15 admission it's a nice afternoon out.

Well, the weather lately has been good for riding at least. I was down at the Harbourfront Centre this past week and was amazed at the number of cyclists who were out. Granted it was 16*C, but still...

I went last year. There were a few deals on previous year models, but the big thing is the chance to check out a pile of different bikes, seeing what's there. I didn't buy much, but should have bought the one bike I saw that was a deal (Specialized AWOL), it sold not long after I walked away.

As with most these types of shows, the best time to snag a deal is at the end of the show. Nobody wants to carry goods back to wherever they came from.

Unfortunately I can't go Sunday or I would have for that reason. May try to haggle a bit regardless, but not getting a high end helmet so expect price to be what it is. Will see............

Got a new helmet at the bike show, a Specialized Max, that I really like. Overall was kind of disappointed with the show. The bike manufacturers that were there (Giant and Norco didn't appear to be) only had a few bikes. Trek factory display had maybe 15 bikes total with multiple same color/models. The Toronto Trek store had more bikes, but not a lot of variety. Couple of Toronto bike shops had large displays. Maybe I was expecting too much, but advertising made it sound pretty big. Fair bit of clothing and other gear. Overall glad I went, was a bit disappointed, but won't go back next year.

The only show of this type I've been to is the Sportsman's Show during March Break, and this was decades ago. I found it was just as you described, though IIRC there were pretty deals to be had on rods, lures, and such.

I wouldn't put the Auto Show in the same class as others. No one goes to the auto show expecting bring home a car.

My biggest disappointment was how few of the factories were there. Even the ones there didn't have much. Some of the bigger retailers had a ton of bikes hanging around for sale. I was expecting Giant, Norco, Specialized, etc to be there with factory displays. Similar to Ford and GM at car shows. Not all their products, but a good few of them. Even some of the travel stuff and charitable ride info was weak. The Sportsman show has factory displays like Shimano, Browning, etc and that was what I was hoping for. Maybe I had my expectations set too high and was the victim of good marketing. Again, glad I went, but won't be on the go to list next year. If you head down let me know your thoughts.

I'll be heading down to the show later this morning. I don't go looking to get deals, but rather to see what the manufacturers might have up their sleeve in new tech, and I always run into some industry people I know.
I had an exhibit at the show two years ago. That was the only time, although I may do one again in the future.

Maybe you will see some stuff of interest Dan. There was a rather large wheel only booth there, don't remember the brand. Hope you enjoy it

I went today - didn't buy anything. There are new take-off / demo items that are there at times that can be a great deal. Last year I got a great set of Arkel panniers super cheap. This year Trek had a Vaude waterproof set for a very good price but I wasn't interested. If you want clothes, helmets or shoes, it can be a good bet. For Bikes, I prefer Kijiji or other second hand options. Seems to me like there are more high end bikes which isn't my thing at all.
