Wow, look what the Japanese built

... and we (in most of the modern world) get a few intermittent bits of street space stolen from curbside parking.

That looks like one beautiful ride. Very nice.

Wonder if it's full of Freds like MUPs in America. :D

Seriously...Looks really cool.

Those Japanese do know how to do things right. :thumb:

I'm impressed, but @indyfabz makes me wonder if in Japanese they anglicize "Freds" or call them (us?) something else.

Very beautiful trail and impressive bridges. But isn't that Japan's only major trail? 43 miles long, where as the U.S. has over 23,000 miles of rail trails alone. This doesn't include the canal trails. I would hope they do make these very nice in Japan since the space is limited.

It isn't he Freds you need to worry about on US MUPs, it is the gaggles of old biddies taking up the entire width of the MUP that are so hard of hearing that they don't hear the cyclist's bell/verbal announcement, Dog walkers with those extendable leashes (dog on one side of the MUP, owner on the other), joggers wearing headphones.... Or -- I kid you not, the mandated 5- or 7-mph 'speed limit' imposed on cyclists on the MUP. I absolutely reuse to ride the local MUPs for those reasons.

Nope, there are bike paths all over the place, some even have special lifts to take you up to an enclosed path suspended under a bridge. Usually empty too. And apart from anything else the drivers are so courteous riding on the road isn't a drag anyway.

Sounds like they want to discourage cyclists from using said paths in favor of pedestrians. 7mph on level ground is slow even by a recreational rider's standards. A couple of the MUPs around here have 10mph limits posted, but almost every cyclist I've ever seen on them were exceeding that.

Entire West coast of North America... Incidentally, the Fukushima power plant was destroyed by a tsunami, not the earth quake.

Are you offended by "Freds"???? Everyone has to be somewhere.

I've gone through there a few times- didn't really follow the paths that they mark out though. They have an event where you can ride on the actual roadways every couple years too - Setouchi Shimanami Kaido International Cycling Event ?CYCLING Shimanami?

inland nuke power resources using routed water cooling might be better... just impracticable for japan.
