What type of crankset should I get?

Lookin for a decent, inexpensive crankset to throw on this fixie im building. I’m thinking either a Sugino RD2 or an Origin8 maybbeeee a Retrospec, but any other suggestions? 165mm would be great cuz the frame (and myself) are pretty small (49cm frame) n the size of the bottom bracket spindle is 120mm (a wider one)

You need to determine bottom bracket spindle length after you decide on a crank.

The bottom bracket was there when I bought the frame. Same with the brakes and drop bars. I took off the brakes to be replaced but the bottom bracket is fine, so I’m just gonna leave it

Often fixed gear cranks are a bit shorter than normal to help prevent pedal strike on turns, and can help spinning downhill. It can depend on your bottom bracket height if cranks need to be shorter. Touring frames sometimes have lower bottom brackets. Normal spindle lengths for fixed cranks is less than 110 MM. Your chain line will likely be off with a 120, and a 120 will increase the chance of pedals striking. Pedals factor in also, a Speedplay will give more clearance than a quill pedal.

My road bikes have 170 MM cranks, one fixed gear bike is 170 and one is 165. Both work well on the frames they are on.

Ahh gotcha thanks. Shud I try to get a new bottom bracket spindle then? A shorter one? I just didn’t want to spend money getting a new one when I didn’t need to, but if it’s too wide n will cause problems then I can invest in a new one

Chain line for fixed gear bikes are usually standardized and a crankset will have a recommended spindle length. Often a Shimano cartridge bracket for about $20 is the best option. Then you might have to correct the chain line by altering your rear hub. Sheldon Brown web site has info on this.

Pick your crank first; that will determine what bottom bracket you need. If you're getting a crank designed for a single ring, the manufacturer should specify what spindle length will work to get a decent chainline.

I see I see! Sugino rd2 crankset needs a 103mm square tapered BB spindle and Origin8 propulsion requires 107mm. I’ll do the math to see how much a new BB and the crankset will cost and go from there.

Thank you!! And I’ll check out the Sheldon brown site too
