Yeah - this.

Of course the few times I don't stare to see if I know the other person, it turns out to actually be someone I know. Then I feel bad.

On the other hand, triathletes rarely look at other riders IME. They usually are on their aerobars, looking straight ahead with a tough guy face while mashing at 60 RPM. But then triathletes aren't really cyclists, are they?

I look at other cyclist but only to see if they're looking at me.

First, show us your gravel bike to determine if it's worth looking at.

Triathletes view everyone else as competitors.

It's all about the bike.

If you are a guy , I am looking only at your bike. If you're a female, I am looking at you first, then your bike.

This really happens? Head down, dialing up the watts and focusing on breathing. Never noticed.

The thing to do is ALWAYS stick out your hand and wave, then you will make the other guy self conscious that he didn't recognise you.

If it is an attractive female I look at her first. If it is a guy, I look at the bike. I think that is pretty normal.

They're probably talking among themselves...

"Gosh that's some tacky looking bar tape and finishing stuff, no way it came from a local bike shop. Walmart maybe? Nah, cheaper then Walmart!"
