Why do cyclists look at other cyclists?

This, 100%^ Where I live we have a fairly close knit group of cyclists, and if I see another one on the road I am going to try to figure out if I know them or not. Which, as you say, is always hard when they're wearing a helmet and sunglasses just like every other rider out there.
Of course the few times I don't stare to see if I know the other person, it turns out to actually be someone I know. Then I feel bad.

On the other hand, triathletes rarely look at other riders IME. They usually are on their aerobars, looking straight ahead with a tough guy face while mashing at 60 RPM. But then triathletes aren't really cyclists, are they?

If it is an attractive female I look at her first. If it is a guy, I look at the bike. I think that is pretty normal.
