Why do cyclists look at other cyclists?

I was out cruising on my gravel bike. I noticed a lot of these guys in their group rides keep staring in my direction. I am not sure if they are looking at me or my bike. I do feel somewhat uneased.

They, likely wondered why you were starring at them.

We need more info. Are you a dime? Is your bike out of the ordinary? Were you naked?

Anyway, it's simple curiosity. Similarly when two motorcyclist pass, they nod and check each other out. When I see a the same car as mine, I give it a look to see who's driving it, or if they've upgraded anything. Same applies with biking. I'll scope out a passing cyclist. I'll be curious of several things. Are they faster than me? What kinda bike they're riding. What gear and accessories they might have. Is she hot?

Minority brethren syndrome. Motorcyclists do it also.

Sizing up in case something were to come about. Or judging others by assumed political grease vs wax stance.

If you are a dude and they were dudes, they were checking out your bike. If you aren’t a dude, then they weren’t checking out your bike. I won’t pretend to have a clue as to what was going on in their minds if they were chicks.

I like to imagine it was something like this:

OBeast: "One look?... ONE LOOK?! I don't think so!"
(OBeast reveals Magnum)
Other Guy 1: "There it is"
Other Guy 2: "Magnum"
Other Guy 3: "Holy moly"
Other Guy 4: "Yeah baby! That's what I've been waiting for!"

I'm pretty sure Blue Steel would have sufficed.

I understand why young people do it, but why do senior citizens do it? Wishing they were young? Nothing better to do? Paranoid? Nosy? Nothing they haven't seen a million time already. In any event, it is a people thing, not just something that applies to cyclist.

This thread reminds me of other peculiars like when someone intersects your path while walking in the same direction then walks a few feet and turn around and look at you in surprise. Thing is, it happens on closed paths with only one exist so where do they think you would go?

In my case I am usually checking out the bike, saying hello to the rider, or if it is an attractive female might be checking out her too... Mrs Blue192 does the same but checks out the cute men instead of women.

I am always interested in what they are riding, especially if something about it catches my eye. Of course I make sure to smile and wave at the ladies, trying not to be the dirty old man. 😎

I'm checking if they wear their sunglasses over or under the helmet straps.

There used to be a weekly shop ride running opposite to my commute and some days it seemed like a third of them were staring across the road at me. It looked to me like they had the demeanor of self-consciousness, perhaps inexperienced riders.
