I started in 1978. No one was wearing helmets on bikes then. Pretty much the only helmet made for cycling was the Bell Biker. It weight 17 ounces and had a shell of Lexan.

I wore it on every ride, and in 1981, I got hit head-on by a car. The impact was severe enough that it sent me flying in the air, I'm told. I don't remember the accident or the ambulance ride. I was knocked out for a while. My helmet was damaged, of course, and I replaced it. I believe it saved my life, though I don't think this can be proven.

My college roomate had a Bell Biker helmet in 1975 and it save him some serious injuries. He and his buddies were racing down a hill in the Cincinnati area. Car backing out of a driveway stopped for the first riders, but pulled out in front of Jim who was trailing a bit behind the others. He t-boned the car broadside and flew over it, then slid over a hundred feet further on down the road. His helmet was ground through on one side -- and that would have been his skull if he wasn't wearing that helmet. He got a new helmet from Bell (for free! for his story/endorsement) and a new bike - the Viscount Aerospace Pro - that he was using that next year when I was his roomie at Ohio State... He NEVER rode without his helmet when I knew him.

I had the use of one of the original SkidLids that someone had left behind after one of our club's sponsored rides...

I wore it on my first TOSRV in 1977...

Wore helmets on bicycles in the '90s and liked them, then my hip went out and I switched to motorscooters. Then a couple years ago I was getting neck pain from that heavy helmet wobbling my head around and I quit wearing the helmet.

Got my hip replaced last fall and ordered a bicycle (now I have two), but hadn't used a helmet. But I kept having trouble with hats and headwinds, so ... today I went to the LBS and came home with a new bicycle helmet--with a visor, partly thanks to this topic thread, but also because I always thought the helmet kept my head cooler. I had to have the visor to keep the sun out of my eyes a bit, and now I won't be distracted trying to grab my hat in a wind gust.

Oh, btw--I have a motorscooter for sale now.

True story - when I got my MC license way back in 1992 the instructor ran us through the skills course. This was in CT, no idea how other states do it. One skill... we had to ride towards a line at I think 20 mph or so and the instructor would put one or the other arm in the air and we had to avoid that line on the side he indicated. The only rider to dump his bike was on a harley. Taking a license test on a harley, maybe not terribly smart. I did it on a crotch rocket, also not the best.

I've landed on my head twice in my life while bicycling and damaged my helmet both times. Would have had a nice gash in my head the last time from the rocks I landed on but ... didn't. A helmet will not save you from a speeding car or a nuclear blast but there are plenty of things it is good for.

i took the msf course in Illinois around 2000. The instructor could fly through the course on a fully loaded goldwing! No clue how in the world it was even possible.

Son had a nice crash yesterday at the race. Face got chewed up, never touched the helmet. Saved him a few bucks by landing on his face! The bike is fine, too. New wheel set and it would have sucked to have had to replace it. I do think this crash will motivate him to ditch the beard.

Should probably consider full face helmet.

I'm guessing he's done the course a time or two and gotten very used to it.

Goldwings are pigs, but are well balanced pigs. With a very competent rider they can carve quite well. Not as good as a sport bike or standard, but the size, they do very well. Kind of like a fatman dancing. Light on the feet.
