Not anymore ... not these days. These days athletic shoes (as found in a specialty footwear stores) come all sorts of colours for both men and women. I know because I've been to such an establishment and have had a look ... as well as purchasing my own brightly coloured pair of running shoes for the 10K I did in January.

That's 100% true for women, not so much for men. Also, I knew you were going to say that.

There are different colours the issue is that the purchaser for the store doesn't usually have the same taste that you have. These days I cut out the middle man and order shoes from big box stores such as Eastbay and forget about buying from stores. They stock a fuller range and you can purchase for yourself. Cut out whoever in your athletic stores it is that thinks "these shoes wont sell" and buy for yourself. The benefit of that is that you usually wear styles that no one else does.

I guess girly colors are subjective. I had a Raleigh Competition in the 70s. Alas, got stolen. It was Lavender. Given that I was 6'2" and 230lb not too many people teased me about it.

That's the political correctness we hear about so often nowadays. They'd have us believe there are no traditions. Nevertheless, in virtually every culture in the world colors have defined genders.

Lucky for you, they kept their comments to themselves.

This is a men's Nike shoe. But I would guess that 99% of people would look at it and think it was a girls shoe. Looks like it to me. I doubt it's a big seller outside of the Bay area.

Okay, first can we agree to put those images in a spoiler with a warning next time? In any event, they may exist but men sporting those brilliant colors is still a rarity much outside of the big top.

First, no. Colors exist. Deal with it. Otherwise, I see men wearing brightly colored athletic shoes all the time, and I live in the dowdy midwest.

Some people just like their bubbles.

Yeah, I would be surprised to see many guys in the 82nd Airborne wearing this.

By the way, I like the bike. I would not assign any unmanliness to a male rider of that bike. Nor would I attribute any lack of femininity to a female rider. The colors are pretty neutral. You've done the dimensional analysis and the size works for you. Good luck, enjoy.

Definitely female. No self-respecting man would ride it. If you ride that bike, every man out there will mock you.

KraneXL, yeah, I understand. Here in the US and elsewhere in the English speaking world we are trying to remove gender from pretty much every context, while in a lot of other countries (that is, all countries speaking Romance, Germanic and Russian languages and probably a lot of others) the gender is baked into each noun and you have to remember gender to get the article* right.

Actually, back in that day any comments my friends or acquaintances made rolled off my back. But if one hadn't, it was probably pretty lucky for them that they kept their comments to themselves. An object lesson from that: most of the time, biting one's tongue is a win-win. Wish I'd drawn this conclusion faster and applied it more consistently.

*Except Russian. As I understand it, Russia does not use specific articles. "I want piece of cake" instead of "I want a piece of cake". Any Russian speakers care to correct or elaborate?

Exactly right ... I also seem men wearing brightly colored athletic shoes all the time. They've very popular at the local university and on a run with 500+ people, you'll see all sorts of colours in action.

Even the most PC of you here would look at this other Diamondback model and know it is made for a girl.

....
But your daughter and my daughter would both look at it and say, "Dad! Do you even know me?"

May as well lock this thread, people ^^^ are trying to ruin it now. I just wanted to know if the bike looked like a girls. It wasn't a big deal. It is a girls bike, but did it outwardly look like one? That was it. Some of you could get offended or bring controversy into a discussion about the price of milk. I heard milk drinking is linked to toxic masculinity.

Even more complicated - in Spanish agua (water) is feminine, but you say el (masculine article) agua, not la agua. Also, mano (hand) is feminine, but it ends in o (tipically masculine). A lot of other exceptions, language isn't logical.

And isn't the plural "las aquas"? It's been a while since my last Spanish class.

It doesn't FWIW. I might think the top tube looks a little short, if I noticed at all, but girls bike would not cross my mind.

Have you ever driven by a crossfit gym? An athletics field? I see guys in shoes like that all the time, and Detroit ain't exactly the Bay Area.

Traditions are inherently subjective. Cultural preferences are inherently subjective. In the modern world, at least in the U.S., where I live, cultural gender color preferences are becoming less and less important. To respect a person''s subjective color prefernces is not to enforce political correctness, it's just basic human decency.

Are the prices the same between the "women's" models and their "male" counterparts? That's what I want to know. If not, one side is getting gouged.

I read somewhere that women specific items are generally pricier than men's, even if the only difference is the color.
