Police Impounds

Hello,

I live next to a University and was wondering what happens to all the bicycles that are simply left out for a certain amount of time. I have seen campus PD cut the locks and haul the bicycles away, however, any idea on where they may go? Are they recycled back into the community? Are they auctioned off or simply put into a storage. I am asking as I am looking for a summer project and want to see what I can snag. Thanks a bunch!

Here in Phoenix they auction them off by the palette. Or they used to. Not sure where the proceeds go. But charity makes sense.

In the UK I believe they auction them off but you have to be registered ... I guess as a dealer ... to be eligible to attend the auctions

Or nip over to China and see if you can pick one up on the cheap

Sometimes they sell them off just before the semester begins.

They end up on property room in the LA area. I have bought bicycles from people who have purchased these lots before, usually very cheap as they have to move a lot of inventory.

My university used to auction abandoned bikes one day each summer. Got two old steel road bikes one for $2 the other for $3. Embarrassed to admit I never actually did anything with them beyond riding one down my street while the tire slowly deflated; finally put them on the curb when moving. I think they were gone in 15 minutes.

I thought that was funny ... they were probably chained up for months before the Uni removed them but you leave them for 15 mins and there's always some chancer who thinks he's a bit clever just because he's nabbed it .... if he knew you'd paid $2 for it he wouldn't have bothered.

When I put them on the curb it was quite clear they were free for the taking. Also quiet street in a neighborhood of grad student renters and homeowner retirees.

They probably either sat in that guy's basement for 3 years until he moved, or ended up back on campus getting their locks cut off and re-auctioned ;-)

Yeah, Jon Stewart, George Clooney, and their wives have a 43 acre compound in upstate New York. It has jump and cyclocross courses, a surrounding 1.2 mile dedicated MUP, and a fully equipped repair shop.

Our University has a weekly sale in a warehouse where they sell everything no longer used by the University. Pretty cool, literally everything. Desks, furniture, cabinets, computers, lights, microwaves, books, movies, gas chromatography machines, centerfuges, vehicles. Oh and bicycles.

In Gainesville Fl both the City and University use Govdeals.com for abandoned bikes and surplus equipment. Most are Walmart bikes. Occasionally there is a halfway decent bike to be had for under $20. Working for the City I can easily check up on what is coming in and out. Not a great bike, but have a $15 bid on a Fuji Arcadia. Just needs cables and housing ($13 last time I did it) and some bar tape, and the usual cleaning and servicing. Will wait until August or September to sell when college starts back up and at least make $50 or so on it.

I'll def. give govdeals a look. I've learned that my local Uni does auction off the bikes and donates to a local charity that teaches HS how to work on bikes and keep em off the streets.

My university would sporadically sell them when they collected too many to store. They did have to hold them for so long before selling, to allow the owner to reclaim, but after that they would go at a university property disposal sale.

At the university in the town where I live the police impound bikes over the summer. The generally leave a tag on them a couple of weeks ahead saying something like, "If this tag has not been removed by x date, the bicycle will be impounded." They then have one or two days a year when they auction off the bikes. Occasionally something interesting will turn up, but for the most part they are clapped out big box store bikes that simply get left behind when students move away.

They get sold to the public at auction, or scraped, or give to charity. I volunteer at a shop that receives donated bike, makes them safe to ride, and sells them. The proceeds then go to support the local chapter of the Boys and Girls Club. We get bike at the end of every semester for Princeton University. They usually come with "evidence" tags.
