Bike jerseys: The numbers.
I’m looking for some jerseys (less than $80), but I’m short and nothing fits. I’m 5’ 7” (was 5’ 8” before back surgery), slim, and 149 lbs. I was wondering if some of you guys with jerseys from different manufacturers (less than 2 years old) would be willing to post actual measurements. Specify size and cut. I know it would benefit others. I need something with the following, probably a medium or large: From the armpit to the base of the back center collar (not the top): More than 12” (30.5 cm) - the most important part. Length of the front, from the base of the front collar to the front hem (the zipper minus the collar): Less than 20” (51 cm) If you could also post the chest, armpit to armpit, it would be helpful. Matt -- another option is to buy the jersey(s) you like, in the closest size larger to what fits you, and take to a seamstress/seamster for alterations...for a custom fit. I sew a bit myself and I've done that with a few of my jerseys...both ways. I currently wear LARGE. Had a couple that I grew out of...but were otherwise in good condition...and I added narrow panels to slightly increase the size to fit me. And, purchased a couple that were XL and decreased the size. Not a difficult task really. Dan |

I’m going to have to accept that they simply don’t make clothes that fit me, and that I’m going to have to find a tailor if I don’t want to look like a slob.

Many manufacturers offer jerseys in several cuts: race, club, and plus.
At 5'7" and 150 lbs, you're probably at the upper end of a medium in race cut. Can anybody verify that? |
I am right in the published specs for medium size, but I have the wrong body type. I’m thin, but shorter and compact, not tall and string-beany. I got two Medium Race jerseys from different manufacturers. One measured 17.5” across the chest, and another 19”. The larger one was comfy around the chest, but both were too tight under the armpits. When I took some measurements they both measured the same from the armpit to the center of the back collar, 12”. It was obvious that the 12” measurement was the problem, not the overall size. I could probably find a large, hopefully with lower armpits, but it would also be longer overall, which is a problem, especially with a full zipper bunching up. I’m just not built like Chris Froome. I don’t have a lot of weight to loose, especially around the torso, and my shoulders aren’t going to get any smaller. I did some googling, and discovered that the models you see wearing mediums are usually 6’2”, so there’s no way it’s going to fit someone 5” shorter. 5’9” is supposed to be average. |
I'm 5-10 and weigh 158 and generally wear a medium. sounds like Mediums maybe too long in your case. If a typical medium is too long, you could try one from DHB, which is a UK brand sold by Chain Reaction and other UK sellers. I got one of theirs and its really too short for me. Have a hard time getting stuff into the pockets.
Pretty well made though and reasonably priced. |

Pretty well made though and reasonably priced. I saw those on Wiggle. Would you be willing to measure the jersey? Esp. the armpit to the bottom of the back collar, the chest (armpit to armpit), and length of the zipper (excluding the collar). Thanks. |
DHB has different series of clothes with different fit.
These are the measurements of Aeron jersey, size M: - armpit to the bottom of the back: 42 cm - the chest (armpit to armpit): 40 cm - length of the zipper: 53 cm - length of the zipper (excluding the collar): 48.5 cm These are the measurements of Aeron Speed jersey, size M: - armpit to the bottom of the back: 42 cm - the chest (armpit to armpit): 36 cm - length of the zipper: 51 cm - length of the zipper (excluding the collar): 48 cm Both of them fit me perfectly, I don't find them short. I'm 181 cm (5' 11") and 73 kg (162 lb). Aeron Speed is more snug fit than regular Aeron (but fabric is more stretchy). Also, what may be very important for you, DHB bibs and shorts have different leg length in different series - regular DHB bibs quite short, Aeron longer, Aeron Speed - even longer, nearly reaching my knees. BTW, at your 5’ 7” and 149 lb you'll probably need size S to get a good fit length wise. And if, say, Aeron Speed may be too tight at S for you (though I personally don't think so), regular Aeron will be a more relaxed fit, Classic or Flashlight series even more relaxed. |
