The price of your bike is going up

at least 10%, in USA. Unless the big companies absorb some of the new expense.

This may not apply to your new bike purchase, but rumor has it around 2/3+ of new bike purchases.

Looks like those people with a whole bunch of bikes might have made a good investment.

Before the politically obsessed come in and get the thread locked, I just want to say in 1997 I paid $1200 for my Raleigh R700, 600 group, alu frame and carbon fork. In 2018 I paid $1124 for my Diamondback, full carbon, 105 hydraulic group.

We’ll make a deal. You give us bikes. We give you Kentucky bourbon. Sounds fair.

I bought my last bike in '85. It's an '84 Peugeot PH10. It still looks and works as good as the day it was bought. I think I paid $189 for it. I have no plans to buy any new bikes.

There seems to be no reason, not to think it is true.

Price isn't going up on any of my bikes because none are for sale ... But thanks for that Lynskey ad ... I have once again been contemplating Ti.

I did a quick analysis on the Cannondale I purchased in 1987 compared to a comparable bike today, and the annual inflation worked out to 3%.

Even if I were to be looking for another, it would be either used or a build.

An increase in the price of bikes should be the least of our concerns. Some companies are already cutting jobs.

I looked at the cited article, and don't know how the OP concludes that bike prices will rise 10%+ in the US. And I know enough about trade theory to know that it is not that simple.

Even if bike prices go up ... when or if i decide to buy another bike, I will pay what i have to, to get what i want. Prices would have to get ridiculous before I decided cycling was too expensive ... but even then, I'd buy used and swap parts or something.

"Chinese crap"?

Sorry, but welding steel tubes is not exactly cutting edge tech. Chinese workers can do it pretty well. Ditto for a lot of carbon fiber applications.

You don't have a choice in most cases. All bearings are made in China today...and as of July 6th there's a 25% tariff on Chinese bearings. All bike computers are made in China. You don't have a choice. Capitalism has sent all the manufacture of that stuff where the margin is the highest.

I'm honestly not sure if for tariff purposes the USA recognizes a difference between Taiwan and China. The USA has been backing down a great deal about the independence of Taiwan the last decade.
