Used a 12g Co2 cartridge in a tire inflator.

My bike came with one of those Co2 tire inflators and had a 16g cartridge in it but was spent,I went to Walmart and they didnt have a 16g cartridge so I bought a box of 5 12g for $2.33 and tested it on my 700x25 tire and works perfectly,it aired it up to about 100 psi.

Yes. It's been a hidden secret for years with these things to buy non-threaded 12g in bulk from a store that sells paint guns. MUCH cheaper then the bike store 16g etc.... Trouble now-a-days is finding an inflator that takes the non threaded cartridges. I think the manufacturers have caught on and discontinued that design/model, or at least I couldn't find any when I had to replace my vintage inflators (that had a spring valve) this past spring.

Generics work fine for threaded cartridges as well. I bought a case of 16g threaded cartridges from Amazon several years ago that I'm still working through. They typically run about $20 for 24.

I buy generic cartridges from:

CO2 Cartridges - Page 1 - Redrock Minnesota

I use threaded but they sell unthreaded also. You can get unthreaded "inflators" from Performance Bike but they generally come in kit. I wonder if unthreaded has been downgraded by bike related manufacturers because the inflator is heavier and more bulky than just carrying a head for threaded cartridges.

I tried an old 12g cartridge I'd had for years yesterday. It worked, but I had to "shim" the inside base of the inflator in order for the cartridge seal to mate with the top...a bit shorter than the 16 apparently (but these cartridges are from my pimple and pellet gun days >45 yrs ago). These old cartridges seem to have lost some of their punch (not a lot of discharge, although I did not put it to a tire). I'm gonna pick up some new ones and try them.

I spent ages last Xmas trying to find a non threaded one that takes 12g cartridges mainly because I bought a bulk of them years ago for an air pistol and have about 97 left (would have filled a few tyres ) but I think everyone had stopped producing them which was a shame.

Non-threaded 16g inflators are still out there. Check out ITW Global Brands 20277 Slime CO2 Tire Inflator.

I have an old Genuine Innovations inflator that will take threadless 16g carts, too. I bought the threadless 16g carts at Walmart years ago.

Haven't seen a 12g one lately, though.

Any of that style will work with a threadless 12g cartridge despite saying they only work with 16g. You just have to stick a small rock or something into the screw on plastic bit that forces the cartridge against the inflation head to make up the size difference between a 12g and 16g.

We're running out of co2 here, we've drank too much beer in the heatwave, two months without rain now. So we've taken to using the laughing gas ones instead.

So, having test fired my inflator when changing tires, I made my way to my LBS for a new cartridge. They only had threaded cartridges and told me that wasn't the way of the world now (huh...my inflator is only a year old) and the threaded wouldn't fit my inflator (didn't sound right, but I couldn't remember which inflator I had purchased---when I got home, I found it does both threaded and unthreaded). In any event, the owner overhears our discussion and says "hold on"...goes to the room of old stuff that glitters and emerges with a quarter case of 16g unthreaded cartridges. He offered them to me for a buck apiece...should have bought them all, but unsure of the life of these inflator heads, so bought ten. Second time the glitter room has paid off for me.

I should have read the whole thread again...this is the inflator I have.

Yep. I wadded up a bunch of toilet paper into a ball on a ride once and shoved it into the bottom. Worked.

You can get bulk threaded 16g carts online as well. Cost is about $1 each.

The top of my inflater is sort of like a funnel so when you screw it down onto the cartridge it hits it dead center and works great,I didnt need to shim or anything..I think the length was the same as the 16g but it was thinner.

I used a dime in mine for a long time but I lost it at some point and haven't thought to replace it. It does deform the dime so you will be out 10 cents .
