Bike Dreams (not "dream bikes")...

I had a dream about my bicycles last night and realized that I can't recall ever dreaming about riding, even though I've been bike commuting for 26 years, and had a bike-filled childhood. And in last night's dream I wasn't actually riding, I was merely walking my bike. Come to think of it, I don't remember ever dreaming about driving either.

I have had dreams where I am able to take enormous steps, and also dreams where I can step into the wind and catch an up-current and sail a great distance...not exactly flying, per se. And once I had a dream I was in a narrow sedan chair atop a waltzing elephant, only to wake and find myself in a tight airline seat experiencing severe turbulence.

But no dreams about biking or driving.

What about you? do you dream about cycling?

---In last night's dream I walked out into my back yard which had been transformed into a much larger park modeled on NYC's Tompkins Square Park. I found my green 1997 Nishiki Blazer MTB-based commuter locked to a bike rack with a U-lock through the rear stays of the frame and back wheel, and the front wheel which had been removed from the fork and placed in the back in order to lock it with the one U-lock as well. (I have never done this in real life, and have gotten by with mere cable chains here in Colorado Springs).

I unlocked the bike and was replacing the front wheel in order to take it back to the backyard shed, where I keep my three bikes and my wife's bike in real life. A man came up to me and asked to borrow my frame pump as he had a flat. I said "Sure," and told him I had a floor pump in my shed, at the rear of the park. So we walked through the very crowded park (My wife and I went to the Gotham Jazz fest in Tompkins Square Park in 2014) all the while I was berating myself for agreeing to help a stranger, who possibly wanted to steal my bike, or at least now would know where my other bikes were stored. I tried to ascertain his earnestness based on his clothing and cycling knowledge, and I was pretty sure he sincere in his quest for a bike pump.

We arrived at my shed...or at least where my shed SHOULD have been. There was simply a brown rectangle on the ground matching its footprint. I was fraught as now my other bikes, including my #1 commuter were missing, along with my wife's bike, the lawn mower, etc.

That's when I woke up.

I have had dreams where I am riding. Don't ask me to remember exactly what happened.

In my dreams I am riding to some place while taking photos along the way, which is what I do in real life. The only difference is the places in my dreams are locations I have never been or seen before.

I honestly can't remember if I've had dreams of riding my bike or not. Presumably I have back when I was a kid, but nothing must have been particularly notable or else I'd have remembered them. And I know I have a lot of dreams but often can't remember them after I wake up.

I've woken up in a sweat replaying a gnarly crash I had several years ago. Good times.

Sometimes I'll dream that I'm biking or driving and even though I'm using the brakes the bike/car does not stop... or, it just takes a really super long time to slow down and never completely stops and I hit whatever it was I'm trying to avoid.

In the movie "Waking Life" one of the characters is some sort of dream expert and he talks about ways to realize you're in a dream -- one of them being that the light switches don't do anything (which incidentally is a dream I have sometimes, as well). I think "not being able to control a machine" must be a thing that happens in dreams

Unfortunately, I am rarely able to recognize that I am in a dream. Every once in a while I can do it, and on even more rare occasions I can forcibly wake myself up if I'm having a bad dream. But it is really, really hard.

Oh yeah, I guess sometimes I'll have the "I'm late for something and there's no way I can get there on time" dream that will sometimes involve a bike.

It's my falling dream variation.

Same thing for at least 20 years. Cruising along fine, as soon as I realize I'm on a bike, a start to crash and wake up.

I have frequent dreams about riding a Schwinn Fastback Sting-Ray I had as a kid. I don't dream about any of my current bikes, just the old Schwinn from the 1970s.

I get that. For some of us, there was a moment of perfection in youth that we maybe don't even consciously remember, but it involved riding like the wind on a bike that was perfect in that moment. Citizen Kane on his deathbed whispered, "Rosebud," and the movie screen showed a glimpse of his childhood sled. It could have just as easily been a bike.

Yep. Great movie. Seems he lost out on a lot of his childhood when he had to leave that sled behind as a kid growing up.

Do a few 1000 km and 1200 km randonnees ... and chances are you'll dream about riding.

I have so many dreams where I'm about 400 km into a ride and everything is falling to pieces.
