My Tiagra levers are still just fine after two years. And that's two of them to your one that broke - so you must be wrong.
Have you ever leaned them against anything, let the bike fall over, crashed, etc? Stuff breaks.
So that they can have stuff for manufacturers to put on price point bikes. And, I guess, so they at least have some parts that are backwards compatible with older offerings.

I agree that one failure does not herald the decline of shimano. My real gripe with Shimano is the game of having all these ridiculous levels of components. How about making a cheap line and a good line. I confess to not understanding the economic model for sure but it would be nice to just have solid stuff that works and isn't a fortune. Claris is it is i guess.
