Exactly.

Never seen a post with videos on here by a spandex wearing ďroadieĒ bragging about racing or beating some hapless commuter with rolled up pant legs either.

Where is the post by carbon fiber dude deriding steel bikes? I can find the steel bike guys deriding carbon all the time on here.

Show me the thread where a roadie snarkingly claims he beat some MTB guy, like itís an accomplishment?

Theres a lot of posts in here doing the very thing they claim spandex roadies do, like you mentioned...with no proof.

Itís like these poor souls claiming to be ridiculed by Carbon bike riding Dentists are...full of ****.

I found your elitism, itís staring back you when you look in the mirror.

Signed/Fat guy riding an aluminum bike Under $2k.

It would be very difficult to nominate the best looking bike on these forums, but for me, your bike is definitely on the shortlist of contenders I would come up with.

That's a gross oversimplification. I admit that. But I think it does highlight a very interesting and very real divide. Do you use your bike as a vehicle, or do you use it as a status symbol? It's a false dichotomy. You can do both, and you can very easily have multiple bikes for multiple purposes. I do, and so do others.

Bikes are for fitness. Bikes are for utility. Bikes are for enjoyment. Bikes are for competition. All of the above apply. Use your bikes how you want, and don't be a jerk to other riders who make different choices. You both ride, and that alone gives you more in common than you have with a lot of other people.

Be chill. We all love cycling.
What's wrong with spending lots of money on a bike and then not riding it? I don't care how other people spend their money. What ever makes them happy. I think most people see through elitism anyway and if they don't then I'm not gonna get worked up about it.

Well, what makes me happy, is accusing other people of being elitists, it's almost as good as accusing them of racism. And there's no defense to it, the more you defend yourself, the more elitist you start sounding.

And I know accusing people of being elitist is very effective. I recall my 30th birthday, in Portland Oregon, on a beautiful summer day, on my best bike, wearing my best clothes, going for a relaxing ride. As I passed a couple who were walking into a bike shop, the woman turns to the man and says, "Hey look! A BIKE SNOB!" Sure took the wind out of my sails, and fast.

There's no such thing as a good electron. The more you have, the more negatively charged the atmosphere gets.

it's none of my business what other people do with their money. If buying an expensive bike and hanging it on their wall makes them happy then more power to them.

Uggg, who wants the hands of the unwashed masses in their popcorn.
If you can't afford to bring your own corn - you are definitely not elite.

side note: Unwashed masses = my first F-I-L, a proper Englishman, used that term often. As in, "the great unwashed masses of the world need to learn to _____ …" He had traveled some in Africa and western USA and he also used an acronym MMBA - Miles and Miles of Bloody Africa (or America). May he rest in peace.

Such a thing as "elitism" as described in OP's original post?

As far as I can tell, it's entirely a strawman made up by people who like to criticize others for having expensive equipment. I have never, ever seen any indication that cyclists with expensive equipment look down their noses at people with less expensive equipment, but I regularly see posts in which people criticize others for having expensive equipment, or posts pretending that people with expensive equipment are obnoxious.

Ahhh .... it has nothing to do with cycling and everything to do with frightened humans.

People are so lost (the mass of men live lives of quiet desperation," some guy said,) and so frightened they cannot be satisfied with what they have and what they do. They need Everyone to have and do and wear and like the same things. When someone comes along with the courage or craziness to live life differently, to see different values and to be moved by different motivations ... all those scared people have to question their own value systems, and since most of us live by pretty arbitrary rules, and since most people frankly haven't bothered to do the serious soul-searching to even figure out what they Really believe (as opposed to what they claim to believe or think they believe) a let alone Why they believe anything .... it is hard to justify pretty much any aspect of anyone's life beyond, "that is what everyone else was doing," or "that is what I want to do," and a lot of people lack the confidence to really stand up and do what they want if everyone else is doing something different.

So ... the easiest way to feel more secure, to think you are "right" and really "understand" what matters .... is to tell other people who wrong they are. That way you can pretend that you know what is right, and you do what is right, and then everyone who differs is obviously wrong, and when you can attack someone else you don't have to defend yourself ... and if they question you, you can look at iit as an attack and get all self-righteously indignant and still don't have to question yourself.

That way you never have to face the scariness of realizing that your entire life and all your values are human constructs, mostly ill-considered, many never considered.---join the crowd, and you never have to think for yourself, just repeat what others say, and if anyone disagrees .... well, they are outsiders, the "other," and thus fair game.

It applies to every aspect of human life, because it is a human thing. Where the wrong clothes, drive the wrong car, ride the wrong bike, watch the wrong TV shows, hang out with the wrong people .... and since you are "wrong" no one has to pay attention when you ask, "Well, who decides what is 'Rght' and 'Wrong'?"

Generally no one ever "decided ... one person imitated another without knowing what the other was thinking or doing, then three more, then it was just "the way people do that thing." it is almost always fine to do what "people" have been doing over and over ... and usually dangerous to point out that no one can really say why, besides that that is what people have been doing over and over.

So ... here, you can spend too much or too little, or tide the wrong sub-genre of bike, or wear the wrong jersey or socks .... I get crap because I never took the visor off my helmet ... because "roadies don't wear helmets with visors." Yeah ... okay. Who decided that ... oh, never mind.

Then if I don't wear my helmet, because ... well, some guy who has broken his collarbone seven times but never had a head injury will tell me that wearing a helmet is safer. Okay.

Wear a casual jersey made out of high-tech wicking fabric, but one that doesn't look like a cycling jersey ... I have gotten crap for that, too. And not from bad people .... just some people don't think things through, and when they can have the "inside knowledge" about how to fit in with the group .... it gives them strength to "teach" others the "right" way to do things.

Don't stress, Moon_mamii. You can ride what you like, wear what you like, carry what you like on your bike .... and just like everywhere else there are people, there will be people who disapprove no matter What you do.

Helical interlocking fastener those folks, i say.

I'm on the side arguing many cry Elitism waaaay too often.

Here's my example: Couple years back I was called an elitist because I listed in my sig line so many road bikes (my newest was a dozen years old, at the time). His 1 roadie was an Al something and 'as good as any of your bikes and about as good as it gets at any price', which I happily conceded. However, the suggestion that if he rode a wider variety [of frames/wheels (including tubular)/gear ratios/tire sizes/etc] he might come to a different opinion, simply inflamed him even more. It's best to reply only once, I got snookered into 2 or 3. I don't think he was just baiting me because he called out at least one Titanium elitist, too (Hehehe, Ti gets called elitist more than CF; glad I've got those covered too, with pro tubulars no less! Hahahaha). I forget who it was, even which of the sub-Forums the Toad lived in.

No Elitism here.

edit: The facts are true, the rest is sarcasm marked by excessive use of smilies - unfortunately only 10 permitted per post.
re-edit: to be specific = sarcasm is everything beyond the semi-colon and word glad.
