Speeds exceeding 15mph on the MUP is dangerous and stupid. If both of you were exceeding 15mph I give the two of you a thumbs down.

Second post just to add...
If I'm JRA and call out ahead to pass, it's because my progress is possibly (or definitely) being impeded. If the rider speeds up, then I no longer have a need to pass as the guy will disappear off into the horizon. If, however, said rider speeds up to prevent my pass only to then slow again (because he can't maintain the pace) and cause me to call out a second time, now I'm a little annoyed. Other than that, it's all good.

As soon as he yelled, "I'm going to pass you, pokey!" you should have yelled back, "You're gonna have to work for it!"
Then it would be more of a Cat 5.5 event, since you both would have known there was going to be a race - and where the starting line was.
You also might have lightened things up at the turnoff by saying, "Man, I was all out! Good chase!"

You did OK in my book. Not bad to have some fun, even if that was not what a "serious, mature adult" should have done.

high road for sure. I will feel the guy out but definitely just want to make sure were cool. I see him all the time in the trail/road. Ii will offer up a coffee n doughnut at the local trail hangout.
I dont want to encourage the prick roadie we are perceived to be sometimes. I want to be a good cycling ambassador and promote not hinder.
FWIW I didn’t see him out tonight. Hopefully tomorrow nights ride will prove favorable.

On my next couple of rides if I see him I will try to talk to him. I see him often so shouldn't be hard.
My wife says its funny, but she is kind of cruel person! LOL
In the end yes, it was a bunch of fun, but I will leave this kind of silliness to somebody else unless the challenge is agreed upon prior to the fun.
He defiantly said "Pokey" He was right behind me when he said it. In my mind it was game on as soon as he spewed that word!

you may have some very sound advice. I might see if he approaches me actually. Who knows maybe i am making something out of nothing anyways. I know when i do race a person (its rare) and get smoked I would not be mad. Ego might not like it but would use it for training motivation. But i am still not exactly a killer rider.

Or, you could mock him for being too slow. That would inspire new races in the future, giving you a chance to embarrass him should he still think himself faster. While gifting him with training motivation.

You had fun, you got a great workout, and you made a guy maybe rethink the wisdom of gratuitous insults. That's a good ride as long as you were safely operating.
There's nothing magic about 15 mph, I have seen plenty of people operating unsafely at that speed, and I am on many paths where 20 mph or higher is quite safe because there really aren't any blind spots, you just slow down when you see other people.
I suspect OP just wanted to tell the story, and the moral question is just an excuse to do so. In which case, well played!

It just proves the old saying: "One man riding a bicycle is just a guy on a bike. Two men riding bicycles in the same direction is a race."
Calling you "pokey" sounds like a challenge to me. At the very least, a bit insulting. I'm assuming you weren't swerving wildly to block him passing, so your behavior sounds fine to me. I would likely have done the same in that situation. Considering your response, it may have been courteous to respond to his initial comment with something like: "Oh really?", or "Challenge accepted!" If he had wanted to simply pass with no drama, the usual "On your left" would have sufficed, but he chose to add a personal dig.

No, if all he said was "passing on the left" no big deal see you later. In my mind all bets are off after the somewhat snarky use of the word "pokey". I only wish I had the legs to do the same thing. In reality though unfortunately I am still a pokey

tl;dr all of the comments, but I read the "I'm going to pass you, Pokey" as a challenge. Would have been better to accept with a "fine with me, if you can" but your setting the pace was implicit. Then, right before you veered off you could have said "Here's where I get off. If you practice more, and you may be able to pass me next time. Pokey."
As for his "a$$*ole" comment, that's just sour grapes. Would have been good to shout "I'm not an a$$*ole, you're just not fast enough to pass me." But hindsight is 20/20.
Someone insulted you, and you mildly schooled him. No problemo.

I've had a couple times on the streets where someone has passed me only because they recklessly ran a red light, and both times I decided I was going to pass them to "teach them a lesson" after I waited for the light to turn green. After the second one, I had to admit to myself that the real reason I did it was that it was fun to see if I could.
