My New (N+1) and First Road Bike

My exercise bike since 2012 has been a 2010 Jamis Commuter 4. But, I haven't ridden regularly for the past four or five years and decided to get back into it, exactly three months ago. The Jamis is very well equipped and... on the heavy side. A week from my 73rd birthday, I've really been disappointed in how slowly I've progressed.

So, with the "hope" that a light weight, carbon fiber, road bike would increase my speed and mileage (with a cost in comfort), I haunted the local bike shops for the past several weeks. I finally decided that $2K+ was just too much to spend on a "hope." Diving into the local "Bike For Sale" ads found lots to choose from for a lot less investment. I finally found and, fell in love with, a Focus Izalco (that's a volcano in El Salvador... hell of a name for a German bike!) at just over $1K. Took my first ride, yesterday, and can not believe what I've been missing! My first ride was 15 miles (haven't ridden that far in six years), up and down hills with nary a thought and, at speeds I have never before experienced on a bicycle. NOW I see what all the fuss is about! It's not (yet) as comfortable for me as my commuter but, I'm confident that, in time, comfort will find me!

Great bike ! I know what you mean about the difference in the ride going to a carbon fiber ride. When I got my Trek Madone I was amazed at how I could climb hills so much easier and the handling is superb. My old Trusty Trek 520 steel touring bike is sitting there sad and neglected now. I used to ride it regularly for my exercise spins. Now its the Trek, I am spoiled now.
