A Sad Epiphany
Last night I was tidying up the kitchen. There were four water bottles among the dirty dishes. As I handled them, I thought "Gee, I really like water bottles."
From that thought came the realization that I like all things bikey. I like my jerseys, my ride commemorative shirts, my cone wrenches and chain whip. I like my silly cleated shoes and clipless pedals. I read books and magazines about bicycles. I can get lost in a mail-order bicycle gear catalog. I like watching bicycling on TV. I like hanging out in bike shops and talking about bikes. I like lubing my chain and wrapping my handlebars. I get a special buzz from rebuilding a hub or installing new cables. And then it dawned on me... I am a bike geek. And I was probably the last to know this about myself. Oh yeah, I like riding my bike too. |
haha :p I'm sure we can all relate on some level. :)

In our humble existance on this rather insignificant planet, when one comes to the realization that he or she is a bike geek, they should celebrate this discovery!
For, behold, you are among the minority of citizens who merrily move about their daily chores on a conveyance that is both easy on the eyes and the environment. You are both mentally and physically healthier than your neighbor, and you can do things that other mortals not only can't do, but would never think of doing! Enjoy your newfound perception! Put on a jersey, grab a water bottle, and go for a ride!! And, at the end of the ride, before you pull into your driveway, or onto your street, sit up in the saddle, stretch out your arms to embrace the world, and shout "I am a bike geek!" (Caution....that last part may best be done in a neighborhood that does not know you....don't want those pesky guys in the white coats with that uncomfortable canvas jersey hanging around your house again!!) :D |

I think geeks would think cyclists are too eccentric for them.I think they could handle our tinkering with bikes and reading catalogs, but when it comes to riding a bike over a big hill in 95 degree windy conditions,we are a breed apart.

Hmmm. will nebill be at the Hilly Hundred? Good question! 857.7 miles from home for me....but what's a few miles when there is a bike ride going on? Not gonna say I'll be there....but I did bookmark that site, and will just have to see how things progress for the year! Sure looks like a fun ride, tho!!

Congratulations. The sooner we all realise that this isn't just a phase we're going through, the world will be a better place.

Hey, tell me about it! I have the same thing with musical instruments also. Combine the two.... man I've got some expensive habits!

I sort of had a similar experience the other night. We were out at dinner and the food was spicy, so my nose was running a bit. Without thinking, I wiped my nose on the back of my hand and realized with horror what I was doing. Of course, on my bike I don't hesitate to use my glove or arm warmers to wipe the old shnozz, but I am a stickler for manners public places I realized I'd crossed over the line! I used bike manners in a restaurant!

I prefer the term "gear head" or "cycle freak". As mentioned above, a true geek would not be out riding. But what ever we are called lets just keep the wheels turning, the night lights burnin' and never forget who we are, we are CYCLISTS!!!!
