Just a quick note about materials (i'm a steel frame builder)
The components in a frame - tyres, stem, handlebars, seat all have much more flex than even the most flexible frame - so what can be perceived as a stiff frame conversely can be attributed to component choice

If riding slow on a heavy bike, the frame material matters not at all. Supple tires is the only real variable.

I'm imagining that your riding area is flat- that 40 lb 'just rolls once it's up to speed' thing peters out quickly when you get to a hill, & the discomfort sets in.
Correct. Sir, you are spot on.

However, there is no contradiction in saying I want a nice ride. One verb, not 2.

PaulRivers...You have an excellent approach. No question having the body in good physical shape is an advantage for any activity.

Ok, so I was probably too hard on myself. I never track anything, right? Except I did play with Strava this summer and captured a couple rides: 1) A 56 minute gravel ride that averaged 11.9 mph, and 2) An hour and six minute mountain-bike ride that averaged 8 mph. I stopped several times for photos on the gravel ride, and I don't know whether Strava is smart enough to know that I've stopped pedaling.

The 11.9 mph gravel ride was done on 650b x 47 mm WTB Horizon tires. The 8 mph singletrack ride would have been on Schwalbe Hans Dampf tires. Strava says my top speed on the gravel ride was 32.2 mph. That's honestly hard to believe; the downhills on that ride aren't steep enough to get me going that fast. My top speed on the mountain bike ride was 22.8 mph. Eh. Maybe, but I am skeptical.
