helmet advice
I am looking for a bike helmet. I have a Protec helmet I bought for skating that says "Classic Land" on the inside, do I need to buy a new helmet to be safe for street riding on my bike?

Your Protec helmet should be okay. You may want to try Bell. They make many styles to choose from and have great ventilation.

Bell's range of helmets is broad. You can buy a basic helmet for a few bucks. I think I'd take the skating helmet to an LBS and compare it to a bike helmet. Maybe get the opinion of the owner/manager.
Then again, maybe Protec has a web site where you might find an answer. |
I like Giro. http://www.girohelmets.com/usa/cyc_index.html
You can use your helmet if you're comfortable with it. |
I got a Giro Transit II. I've already tested it. I fell on my head and the helmet worked perfect.

Whether you are designing helmets or standards for testing helmets, the place to start is by making some assumptions about what kind of crash you are likely to have. Then you design a helmet that will minimize the type of injuries that you'd expect from that kind of crash. A helmet that is designed for skating might coincidentally be quite similar to bicycle helmet or it might not. It might be time to read the small print on the literature that came with your helmet. |
The Bell Helmet excuse me language sucks. The scuffle is Bad! Go with a Pro-Tec Signature or a MSG one. I ride BMX/freeride So that what I do! Dans Comp got the best deals on BMX helmets. Good People!

I use a Protec land, it's made for cyclists and skaters and is designed to withstand multiple impacts as long as you dont destroy it. Typical bicycling helmets are meant to be tossed after one impact. It has less ventilation than most cycling helmets but i stay nice and cool by wetting my hair before and during a ride. Plus, the padding is removable for easy cleaning.

I think you'd be safe, but you will probably want more ventilation than the Protec provides. That, I'd say, is the major difference.
