Even though my 'primary bike' was a 40 year-old lugged straight-gauge steel '75 Fuji S-10S, all I ever got was "nice bike" or a few years ago when I was a rest stop on a organized MS150 ride - "WOW! Now THAT's a piece of History!!!" -- of course that aforementoned Fuji still wore some vintage 'tire savers', SunTour barcons and a Pletscher rear rack... Still respectable at under 26 pounds bare / 30 pounds as ridden (with rack, triple crankset, water bottle, frame pump, seat tool bag...)

FWIW, my 'newest/lightest bike' being triple-butted CrMo is less than two pounds lighter (bare)...

As long as they don’t say that about the engine, I could care less.

No, because it's never happened. Wouldn't care if they did either. It's my bike after all.

I love how a closed thread sparked a new thread that is actually quite popular. Me personally I wouldn't care if someone called my bikes crap. I know the components on them and know I didn't buy the bike at a big box store and generally I or a long time bike mechanic has put together the bikes. So it just doesn't fit and would make me chuckle. If I ever build a bike with Shimano Tourney then I would be hurt if you didn't call it crap.

If it's an antique Schwinn, oh yeah.

I know that is how some people would view my bike as it is very entry level. To me it says more about the person than it does your bike. I would replace the people ( or limit your contact) before I would replace the bike.

I'm having a tough time imagining myself being in a situation where someone would actually say,"Your bike is a piece of crap".

Try bumping onto (or even a close encounter) with somebody with a better bike.

Well, if I did that, not sure I'd feel entitled to be offended, better bike or not.

What a profoundly useless comment. Or did you seriously imagine that I've never crossed paths with, ridden with, or even raced with people on nicer bikes than mine ??
I've ridden in some circles where I had the nicest, or one of the nicest bikes, and I've ridden with people where it seemed everyone had nicer bikes than me.
As I said, I've never had anyone tell me (or anyone else) that their bike was a piece of crap.
You must run with a real nice crowd.

In another thread, Krane described having nasty near run-ins with pedestrians 4x in a day, now he's nearly running into other people's bikes and/or bumping them.

Where is this guy riding? I want to stay very far away.

I build some to look like that on purpose as junkie as possible just so that they are less likely to get stolen. Some of my favorite bikes in this genre have been purposely left to rust then carefully clear-coated and every accessory, basket, rack, everything is Rusted and just looks horrible like well... A big piece of junk. And of course the goal is that everyone especially the thieves thinks it's junk except the owner who knows better. They travel on the car racks a lot better that way too with less chance of being stolen they have that what I called hey go get the other guys bike mr. Thief I'm Just Junk look.

You know when you address the individual rather than of the issue it means that you have nothing of relevance to contribute. You do that a lot.

Most Americans are not into bikes. I'd say about 98% of the population couldn't care less about how nice or crappy a bike is.

I have been in the local bike shop, while the owner
tells people they should take their BSO back to Walmart and get a refund.
when they come in to get it repaired. (hah)

One Week after the one opened, in the next town over, that let them build a Wally*world there.

likewise those bought in other mass merchant big box stores ..

Not really. In your case you tend to pontificate a lot about subjects you know little about, addressing everyone else as if they'd never ridden a bike or eaten food before. Your information is so bad and so unceasing, it's rather hard to keep the personality out of it especially in that you quickly attempt to demean anyone who disagrees with you.

In case you didn't notice, this is a rather substanceless thread, so I'm pretty sure there is no harm in noting that your posts have centered on a rather large number of near collisions lately. You might want to get your eyes checked.

And most of the other 2% is too busy riding and talking about their own bikes to even notice what you're riding.

Never heard anyone call my bike, or anyone else's bike a piece of crap to their face, but I would describe as "crappy" an LBS owner's wee-wee poor attitude towards potential customers as described above. I presume justification for such behavior will be made by people with similar crappy attitudes.

Its not your problem is it?

It is better as a business to tell the truth, up front
rather than do the work, spend time and money on it,

then be stiffed by someone abandoning the bike , to the shop dungeon,
because the bill exceeded what they paid for it in the first place..

walmart shoppers? save your receipt, they will refund your cost ..

If people think your bike is a piece of CRAP that might not be a bad thing...there is less chance that they will try to steal it!...now if someone made remarks like that about my dog that's something else altogether....

I call my bike a piece of crap all the time! It's a 80's mountain bike that I got with a rack for $40! Gets me from point A to point B with out any issues other than a squeeking brake!
