My favorite part of crit racing is the first corner where 100 plus bikes coast all buzzing and it really sounds like a swarm of killer beez

but king said any silent hub has to create drag so hmmmmmmmm?

According to the guy who built my frame, King employees think they work for God. He doesn't like dealing with them.

Around the 12 minute mark, he discusses freehub design and sound.

Yea well...King is theoretically right but IRL wrong there...Onyx hubs are dead silent--and have the lowest resistance of any hub on the market (per a Duke University study)

If you're freewheeling you're not putting out power, so why's it matter? You're either braking or decelerating on purpose.

King's point is TANSTAAFL. He thinks having a silent hub effects both loaded and unloaded friction. Which, at a gut feeling level, has a degree of intuitive sense to it.....But as measured by Duke, both under load and freewheeling....King's Angry Bees hubs lose out to Onyx's silent hubs.

This guy claims the quiet, low friction hubs like Onyx have real benefits.

Onyx hubs are really neat, but I would have to be feeling pretty rich to buy a hub that costs that much. I buy Hope hubs, quite a bit cheaper than King hubs too. Seems like the Onyx makes more sense on a mountain bike where instant engagement is more important. I played with an Onyx hub in the bike shop. I was really impressed with it. Drag due to freewheeling is really down on my list of priorities. OTOH, my Hope hubs have really annoyed me occasionally on long rides. You know your hub is too loud when you start pedaling to get it to be quiet. I think it's not as bad as a King though.

In a previous life, a sprag clutch device caused me to do a lot of work on nights and weekends. Never found one that didn't work, but people are suspicious of that design. In fact, I'm pretty sure this thing didn't need a clutch at all.
