I've Got A Beef: Pedals
So let me get this straight....
I'm going to spend $2,000 for a bike without a motor and it can't be ridden until I buy some pedals for it. And I can't ask for 10% off the bike because the bike industry just doesn't operate that way.

Pedals are pretty personal and can range from extremely cheap to extremely expensive. Not all shoes fit all pedals. At a certain price, a certain level of seriousness is expected, and most in that category would be unhappy with the bike company's choice.
Imagine the absolute flood of take-off pedals at every bike shop if they did as you say.
Im certain the shop will give you cheap plastic pedals to actually ride on while you figure out which model of clipless pedals and shoes you want.
This doesn't bother most people. I think there are a lot of people who would go one step further and would prefer new bikes not to come with wheels.

if you've saved up for a bicycle in that price range, the cost of pedals might be the least of your future purchases worries when outfitting the bicycle with other things. Sucks it doesnt even come with cheap ones.

Any LBS will gladly supply you with a pair of generic nylon platform pedals-- probably for free-- they'll have a big box full. If I bought a road bike and it came with road pedals, I'd just have to take 'em off because I use SPD.
Mfrs. don't include pedals because it would be a waste of time and parts. I'm surprised some bikes even come with saddles.

Every bike I've bought from the LBS came with pedals thrown in with the purchase. Maybe not the best quality or exactly what I wanted but I've always found use for them.....

Most bikes come with cheap platform pedals, knowing the user of a $2000 bike is likely to install their own specific pedals.
As well, the Shimano SPD pedals I use cost about $25. Not exactly breaking the new bike budget.

Cheaper bikes always come with pedals but expensive bikes don't. Something is not right.

What bugs me is bike weights that don't include pedals. I think they should just add 250 grams for a generic, decently light pedal. That weight would much better reflect reality,

The price doesn't include the cost of pedals. They aren't hiding this from you, so why should there be a discount?
Most people buying a $2000 bike probably have a strong pedal preference, while people buying cheap bikes probably don't care, any half decent platform will do.
I'm strictly a platform pedal guy even on my road bike, and I have a really specific preference for which one. I'd be annoyed if the price of a bike included a pair of SPDs I just had to swap out.

Spending $2K means you care about bikes. that also means you would not have liked the OEM pedals. them not providing any saved us from a thread "bought $2,200 bike and the pedals it came with are cheap and not SPD..." or something like that.
They should even take off saddles since one can ride with cheap pedals, but not with an unfitting saddle. and grips, and handlebars, and stems......
f...% it, just sell me a frame and i handpick the rest myself.
