Dude, what is so hard about this to understand? Adding pedals to the complete bike adds cost. Most people (like me) are going to end up swapping the pedals out.

So why the heck would I want them to add to the bike - and charge me for - something I am going to get rid of anyway?

Yes, I am glad they don't include pedals because it ultimately saves me money.

I would only be happy if it was the pedals I wanted. To please almost everyone they would have to have at least 20 different pedal spec SKUs to go with each size of each model. That would be insane.

I'll take the Emonda ALR 4 Disc.
Would you like the Emonda ALR Disc 520 SPD, the Emonda ALR Disc 530 SPD, the Emonda ALR Disc SPD-SL, the Emonda ALR Disc Look Keo, the Emonda ALR Disc SPD Speedplay X2, Emonda ALR Disc Speedplay Light Action........

At least in my locale, they'll let you ride home with the test ride pedals. Folks will either ask for their preferred pedals to be installed at the shop, or install them at home. The other thing is, unless they have every conceivable pedal in stock, you'll have to wait for them anyway. Withholding a $5 pair of pedals, and losing a $2000 sale, would strike me as weird too, but I've never heard about anybody having such a problem.

To the OP, if you're happy with casual cycling on platform pedals, as I am, the Avenir plastic pedals for $12/pair on Amazon are surprisingly nice. Note that you have to choose the correct thread diameter, probably 9/16" if it's a $2k bike. I now have those on three bikes.

Every copy of Peterson's Field Guide to the Birds should come bundled with cheap crappy plastic lens binoculars that will persist for 5000 years in the county dump.

OP here.... My point is this...

Ya, put a pair of 10 dollar pedals on the damn bike and I'll decide from there whether I'm happy with them or not. Pedals are standard operating equipment. A car dealership doesn't sell you a car without gas in it.

Why is there a seat on every bike sold.?? A seat is standard equipment. Wheels are a popular item to change out on a bike. But, they are included. Of course they are, they are standard operating equipment. Duh.??!!! On and on. And on.

I enjoy playing guitar. I've bought a lot of guitars. You go to the manufacturers website and they list all the prices of the different models. Then, you go to the local guitar shop to purchase. The last guitar I bought had a price listed on the manufacturers website of $1,395. I bought the guitar for $1,100. This doesn't happen with bicycles. And I might add, all guitars come with strings on the guitar. I've bought a lot of guns too. Same deal. I've never paid full boat for any gun I've ever bought. No one has.

I think it's called competition.?? Gee, 3 Giant dealers within 30 miles of where I live. Every Giant bike has the same price in each shop. And I guarantee, there will be no discount. Where's the competition.?? I guess it comes down to personalities, and not price. I don't like one dealer so I'll go to the other. Really.??? Strange world we live in.

No pedals on a bike.?? When you buy a bike why doesn't the dealer say to you.... "Okay, great. Now you can decide which pedals you want. You have 3 choices and there is no charge. IF you don't like any of these I've got loads of choices for you but there will be a charge."

Why are we talking about this.?? It's stupid and crazy all at the same time. It does not make sense. And it seems no one here see's it my way. Laughable.

Put a pair of pedals on the damn bike.

No, you don't need binoculars to learn what Roger Tory teaches you in the bird guides.

That's like saying I need a saddle bag to ride my bike. Um, no. I don't. And you need binoculars to read a field guide, wiseguy.??

In today's episode of "That Guy," That Guy goes back into his local bike shop to complain about pedals not being included with his bike purchase. As he passes through the door - the staff, who are really tired of dealing with That Guy, all saunter into the back to hide.

The moral of today's episode:

Don't be That Guy.

Too many people in here are looking at it from the perspective of a consumer, and not from that of a manufacturer or distributor. Say a bike comes fully outfitted with Shimano 105. Should they also include 105 pedals? What about the lion's share of people who don't use clipless pedals and prefer flats? Should the bike have a pair of those as well? My Cervelo came with crappy Mavic wheels and terrible tires-- as a deliberate cost-cutting measure to keep the MSRP of the bike down, because they know the end user is just going to change the wheels and tires anyway. If all bikes came with pedals, those pedals would go to waste on nine out of ten bikes sold. You think the MTB guys are riding around on the cheap plastic platforms that are on the bike in the showroom? Everybody replaces their pedals... well, almost everybody. Most folders and dedicated commuter bikes come with decent pedals.

Edit: this is also truly a non-issue, unless you're trying to save some pennies and buy online. ANY bike bought at an LBS will leave with those cheap plastic platforms, unless you expressly state that you don't want them. And if you're trying to save a few bucks online, spend that money on some pedals.

Is this your first bike? If not, you must have a preferred pedal type by now. Buy more of those, or take them from the other bike, and ride. If it is your first ever bike, I like SPD mtn pedals. Just sayin ... 😉

And no, pedals do not come with shoes.

Wait, now you are pissed off that Giant gives accurate pricing consistent with the LBS stores?

Twist it any way you like Kaputsa. I'm pissed that Giant doesn't encourage competition to get me back into the store for more quality products and service at a competitive price.

But that's cool. Twist it any way you like.

Yeah, he should be able to get them to throw in some pedals. Maybe some $400 Time carbon specials.

I’m pretty sure my Tarmac came from Mike’s Bikes with the cheapest, crappiest, plastic platforms that they immediately switched out with the Ultegra pedals I brought in with me. I think I still have them in a bin in the garage. You’re welcome to them.

I need to wear pants and shoes to ride my bike. Should I be upset those don't come with the bike, too?

No one agrees with you because you are both logically and factually challenged. I'm sure if you asked the LBS to throw in a pair of pedals, they'd have something in the bin you could have. If you're buying online, bringing your own pedals to the party is just part of the paying less deal.

And miss all this misplaced righteous indignation? It's hilarious!

While I have all of my digits, I am outraged that bike shops don't sell 3-fingered gloves for people who have had kitchen mishaps. For that matter, why do I have to buy gloves in pairs? Maybe I just wore out the right one and shouldn't have to pay for a left one I don't need.
And I buy a $200 pair of shoes and it doesn't come with socks? WTF?

Exactly!

Yes, I understand that S/N on a hobby-driven internet forum is very low, but this is absurd--a complaint about not getting something that he didn't pay for, and that almost nobody would want (or want to pay for).
