I've Got A Beef: Pedals

Of the bikes that I've bought, the lower cost ones came with basic pedals and the higher cost one came with no pedals. All of my pedals get replaced anyway, so the nylon/cage stock ones are just kept in a bag for emergencies.
I cannot image a $2K+ bike owner being happy with a pair of 'free' $10 nylon flat pedals!

This is an example of why I wouldn't work in the customer service industry. If a bike came with clipless pedals some customers would complain they they don't come with the shoes they need. If they came with SPD's some would complain their shoes are for 3 bolt road cleats, and vice versa. I did buy a bike from Bikes Direct about 10 years ago that came with some decent one sided VP spd road pedals.

It's a $ 2000 dollar bike after all and it should be rideable straight out of the showroom floor without having to pay anything extra.....The bike shop or the manufacturer should of at least put on a nice pair of platform pedals. Not the cheap plastic ones but something better quality...I remember when I purchased a $1700 mountain bike way back in 2007, it came with clipless pedals which I didn't want. So I asked the shop to change that and they put on a nice pair of BMX platform pedals at no extra cost.

Do you mean to tell us that you don't have several sets of your own preferred pedals waiting to be used when needed? How did you do the test riding, with generic platform shop pedals? Tell us that's not what you did...

Fine, but now with the nice pair of platform pedals, the price just went up above $2000. Are you just missing this point intentionally?
Also, did you notice that in that 2007 transaction, you actually paid for those pedals?

Some of us in the northern hemisphere look to falling leaves as a sign of fall turning into winter, personally I go by the threads on general cycling Three pages already, excellent!
Personally I'd take a discount for them not to include tires, put that $20 towards something decent.

People who buy expensive bikes tend to already have expensive bike shoes that only work with proprietary cleats. How are the bike manufacturers to know which of the several proprietary cleat systems you use? Back when high-level riders used slotted cleats, manufacturers provided pedals that could accommodate both slotted cleats and cleatless street shoes, but this is no longer the case.

I would say that the manufacturers are listening to their customers.
And based on this thread, they are by not including and forcing customers to pay for crappy pedals.
Then there's the OP who can get a cheap pair of pedals if he wants.
How is that not a win-win?

And both of you demonstrate that the "there's no such thing as a free lunch" principle is going over your head.
Wolfchild paid for a pair of clipless in the price of his bike, and they let him exchange the clipless pedals for BMX platforms.
Good quality pedals cost money. If they come with the bike, the bike will cost more than if they don't have them.

Consider this reality..
At $2k people like the OP May get OCD, wanting is 'best' ,
but disagree, on which pedal they must have..
so none are supplied .
[ Bike Friday (shipped to you ) ads $ to the total
if you want them to supply a saddle and pedals ]
and, so ... the $10 plastic ones go on so the shop mechanic
can give the bike an initial test ride ,
after assembling and fine tuning the bike , out of the shipping carton...
onto the sales floor,
and, perhaps , leave them on for test rides by customers,
in street shoes.

Someone who spends $2000 on a bike and wants to not be wasting that $2000 would already have a strong opinion formed by many hours in the saddle, on what pedals and shoes will best fit his or her needs. Someone who hasn't ridden enough to have made that determination shouldn't force those of us who have to pay $2100 for a bike with the wrong pedals, or to accept a downgrade elsewhere just so that the wrong pedals for us can be "thrown in free". The lower-end market (<$1000) is already fraught with this sort of mediocre compromise. Let's not train manufacturers and merchants to also carry the mediocrity into enthusiast level bikes.
Go out and ride. Get that $2000 bike when you're ready to tell the shop which pedals you want on it. If $2100 is too expensive, get the $1900 bike and have the pedals you desire added, coming in at $2000.
My $1500 road bike came without pedals. I was fine with that because I certainly didn't want cheap platforms, and in fact until the past year I favored SPD pedals on it, which would never have been the obvious choice for a manufacturer to bundle-in.
I got my less-expensive hybrid used, and it came with the original owner's low-end platforms, which I promptly swapped out for something more suited to my needs.

Back in the day (and possibly still?), floor mats and hub caps (for those of us who remember them) were not included in the cost of the car. Though those items aren't "needed" to drive a car, I still bet the trolls on CarForums.com got all worked up about it then. The times may change, but complaining about minutia is eternal.

Actually, the OP has a valid point.
Yes it is true most riders buying an expensive bike will swap out pedals so why provide them.
Yes it is true you would (theoretically) pay extra if they were included, but that argument is flawed because:
...the same can be said for tires and saddles. Almost everybody who buys an expensive bike will swap out the tires and saddle provided by the manufacturer. Regardless, in most cases they (the manufacturer) provides those components to a degree that looks "nice" in the sense that they conform to the overall style of the bike even if they are performance wise low to mid grade.
So why do consumers accept this odd deficit in regards to pedals or rather.. why don't manufacturers "listen" as suggested in regards to pedals and stop wasting add on costs for tires and saddles that will most likely be replaced.
In the real world we all understand why they aren't included but the reasoning argument proffered doesn't really account for the neglect in only this one area. I would have been happy to pay $100 less for the tires and saddle I never used on my new purchase.
