Don't push him. Just love him for who he is. Figure out what both of you can do together as husband and wife. If he doesn't ride as often or as far or as fast as you just except it. Maybe he doesnt care how far he can go in what amont of time it takes. Maybe he'll enjoy taking a walk at sunset more then riding. Maybe he thinks he looks too silly in those silly bicycle clothes.
What ever you do don't try to make him jealous. That would be just so stupid.

If you just got him that bike and he was not riding or exercising before he's doing OK. Be patient and encouraging. Just hang in there. Find out what he likes the most about riding. For example, If he likes sight seeing make plans to go somewhere interesting. Does he have a bike computer? That can inspire people to want to go faster or farther just because they can see what results they get. It gives him an easy way to compare progress if he is interested. It's a good stealth way to motivate someone. Don't say why you are getting it just get it. Even if he is not interested he may notice over time that he is improving his average speed, or distance, or max speed. If he likes gadgets that will go over very well. In fact if he likes gadgets, get him off the bike now while you still have any money left.

Cycling is one of those activities that you love or don't love. I don't think you can convince him to do a lot of it unless he takes to it. My wife rode with me for a few years, then she just let me go without her. She says it's too dangerous, and I really can't disagree with her there. It is dangerous, but I love it; She does not.

As a guy, we seem to thrive (must be genetic) on competition. Challenge him to race when you go out together.....tell him he couldn't keep up with a girls group and things like that.....work the competition angle.

I keep trying to get my dude to come ride with me. He used to be into BMX as a kid, and we used to ride in NC when we lived down there, but since I started commuting to work 2 years ago, he's not even crossed the Queensboro bridge with me. it's frustrating to say the least.
I got him a water cage and bottle, now I'm buying a helmet for him. Perhaps the helmet was the problem...We'll see, after the Performance order shows up.

This is an interesting one. What kind brand of cycling computer do you suggest?

I agree with this one. He thrives on competition and he CAN beat me up a hill. Well, on the few rides we have gone on, he beat me up a challenging hill 3 out of 4 times. And he rubs it in good! I recently had my Cannondale Adventure 400 refitted. They raised my saddle and they lowered my bars to a downward angle. My uphill stroking is much more efficient now which is how I was finally able to beat him uphill.
I SMOKED him like a cuban cigar.
He has very good leg power. I just want to do whatever I can to encourage him on to the next level - helmet, tight pants, fast bike, longer mileage. I'm going to try 97% of the suggestions posted here. It's the only excercise he will agree to, besides volleyball. He threatened me that he would play volleyball.

Wine, cheese and a blanket 'ummmm. You might be on to something. There must be more to this. I mean there has got to be another way. Have you EVER been bitten by a bug?

Under $50 should be fine. Some as low as $20 depending on what they have. Don't analyze the exact type much for now, just get one on his bike. It's easy to get carried away with bike computers, that will come later.
I read your post about him being competitive. This means he is even more likely to be interested in the computer, now he can measure his efforts.
If you get one too, you can let him have a higher average speed, a higher maximum speed, more mileage etc. That will get him going.
There's a reason they call bike computers "The silicon slave master"
Ask all the guys who ride around the block until the total mileage reads what they planned for, but did not get, on their ride that day. Don't ask me how I know this.
edit post: Take him to see a bike race in person. It's very exciting.
