Gotta feel bad for the kid.
My son is eleven. He has some kind of condition called osteo-somethingorother, my wife could tell you I'm not good with remembering medical terms. Anyway it means his bones are pretty fragile.
So last night he's out riding around the neighborhood with his friends on his BMX bike that he has certainly outgrew. Apparently he and another boy got to racing one another, had a collision and both went flying. I see him pushing his bike up the street and think uh oh this can't be good. He's got a good chunk of skin missing in his left palm and another on his right knee along with some pretty good road rash on the top of his right wrist, both shoulders, elbows and his right shin. Must have been an epic crash.
I set about cleaning the gravel and rocks out then sterilise everything. All joints work properly and nothing looked misaligned so I thought we were in the clear. Wife just called to report the doctor said he has a fractured thumb. I've got his new bike hiding at my work waiting for Christmas and now it's going to be a couple weeks at least before he'll even be able to ride it.
Can't help but feel bad for him.

Woman make me faster
Yeah it’s bad enough not being able to ride but not being able to ride a new bike. That’s rough and uncalled for. Hope he heals up quick and it’s not a long drawn out affair.

Hope he heals up well ... but he'll still be excited as heck about the bike. Bit frustrating he can't ride immediately but better than no bike
You say you got ..... was that a typing error and you meant Santa???

Heal quickly!
But darn, good on the kid for pushing his limits.

This will be his first geared bike. But it's those stupid twist shifters. I hate twist shifters. I digress, he's much more of a book worm than an athlete so knowing him he'll be fine waiting until it's completely healed before attempting it. Or at least waiting until his road rash is mostly healed.

You never stop believing in Santa, you just realize its not really that man with a white beard but actually mom and/or dad. Now where's my Christmas present?

Your kid will love his bike, he will just have to wait a bit.
As someone mentioned, twist shifters are fine.
A couple of years ago I rode 30 miles with a briken pinky finger, I wished I had twist shifters then.
My son was a bookworm and not much of an athlete. He now teaches physics and robotics...the bookworms shall inherit the Earth.
Merry Christmas to you, your son and your family.

OK, my mom had a osteo condition. She was on a daily injection drug to build bone mass. It worked. I do not know the name and can't ask her (passed a few years back - COPD). I hope he can find a treatment ...
Twist shifters are fine when adjusted properly. Dual lever shifters really clutter the cockpit. And can be a snag on thumbs and fingers ...
I'll bet he'll take it for a spin and just leave it in one gear

Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
I'm sorry to hear that he has this. If he can crash bikes with only an occasional broken thumb, he's doing way better than most.
The funny kid on "the middle" also has it, along with some kind of orthopedic deviation.
Tell your kid merry Christmas.

He was born with plagiocephaly and torticollis and has been in physical therapy since he was around six months old. Core strength and balance are still weak areas but he's made tremendous progress.
He was pretty stoked about his new bike. But for now video games rule the day.

Sounds like a relatively minor injury for the crash, also sounds like he’s doing exactly what an 11 year old with a bike should be doing, that’s really great especially with some physical challenges. Merry Christmas to you and your family, hope your son has a lot of fun with his new bike.
