Grant Petersen: He Was Right (Again)

Warning: this post is going to be long.

I first started to become interested in cycling in my college years. I needed a bike to get to campus and developed a love for riding. I eventually bought a "nice" mountain and later a road bike with money I made working summer jobs. The #1 most useful source of information about bicycles and about how to ride came from his Bridgestone Catalogs. They were just glorious. I learned just about all of the basics of riding and bike maintenance from his catalogs. They were far more useful than most books on these subjects and far more entertaining as well. Kudos!

Now, I am reluctant to mention what I will discuss next. I tend to be a skeptic by nature and most grandiose claims are usually just that: baseless claims. But I don't think what I'm going to write is grandiose at all. I think it aligns with common sense more than anything else.

Over the years, I've developed mild to moderate knee pain and joint pain of other types. It didn't prevent me from exercising or participating in sports like cycling (obviously) or tennis or ultimate frisbee or hiking. But everything had to be just so. If my bike fit was off, I was in trouble. If I tried playing tennis in shoes that were worn, I was in trouble. I had to be careful. If I tried to come back too fast after an injury, I could be in trouble.

This past year has been the most pain free probably in the past 5-6 years. I credit this in large to following Grant's recommendation to eat bacon and eggs. More days than not, I eat a couple of strips of bacon and a couple of eggs at the start of the day. Mmm-mm, dee-licious. Even without supplements like omega-3 and glucosamine/chondroitin, both of which are supposed to be highly beneficial, I have felt far better this year physically than in past years.

And this is just common sense. We evolved as omnivores, eating plants and animals in the natural environment. The consumption of large quantities of animal fat is what allowed for us to evolve into big brained primates, the most intelligent species on the planet. It's been tremendously freeing to be able to eat meat and animal products again WITHOUT GUILT. Burgers, bacon, eggs, steak.

I'm far from perfect. I eat a lot of processed foods. I don't eat as many vegetables as I should. I still love sugary drinks. But even with all of that, the enormous reduction in pain has been a blessing nonetheless. Every morning, I wake up thankful.

Thank you Grant Petersen. You're still a crappy businessman and I'm not much of a fan of your bikes anymore, but your book EAT BACON DON'T JOG helped me in a very measurable way.

Standard disclaimer: I am only reporting my personal experiences, not making any medical recommendations. Use your own personal discretion and judgement.

Also, while I have not had much of a problem with this, I've noticed that just about all of the grey in my hair is now gone and it's all black now.

I don't think I'll be discussing this subject much any further. I just want to appreciate what I've gained for a moment, file it away, and get on with things.

What were you starting your day with before you switched to bacon and eggs?

In 2017, when I attempted my first century ride in 30 years, I declined a friend's offer of bacon that early morning just before I left.

I had to quit at 75 miles. Neck spasms.

Or was it?

Now I think it was the lack of bacon. I'm sure of it.

Actually, it was large quantities of protein which made the difference, not large quantities of fat. Most of us, our brains are protein.

As for the rest ... every body is different. What works for one might kill another.

I have never understood Grant-worship, but I would not tell a person not to follow his or her perceived best path. May all the right things happen.

Sounds like an infomercial (actually more like the spam emails I get). Pain gone, grey hair gone ... what next?

I have genes for high cholesterol and that diet would kill me. Maybe it’s good for some, I’m not inclined to investigate, but not for all. Overall, I think we’re facing an environmental imperative to consume less resource intensive red meat.

I suppose if a person's diet were deficient in fat and protein ... any source would work, plant or animal. After all, the body digests the stuff into component parts and reassembles it as needed. the idea that eggs and bacon are magic .... or that cycling is best done in street clothes on metal bicycles .....

There's probably at least a dozen other things that are different in your life than previously. Assuming your improvement was caused by eggs and bacon (and I'm pretty pro meat) is a post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy IMO.

I liked bacon. I still like bacon.
But I don't eat much bacon.
Maybe if I start adding Bacon Base to everything that I eat and drink.................................................

I've been enjoying a cheese omelet before a Sunday group ride recently. Maybe I need to upgrade to a bacon and cheese omelet.

3 Simple RUles:

Eat lots and lots of veggie (main source of calory). Eat small portion meat, as condiment. Eat lots of fish and nuts. Eggs are good for you.

Choose Organic.

Avoid processed carbs like bread (even avoid whole grain), flour, rice, pasta, cookies, etc--ie stuff that comes in a box or plastic package.

This will be easier if we just create a standard form for the posts:

I always eat _________________________________________, I never eat _____________________, and my weight is perfect and my health incredible. Before I started this, I ate ___________, and I was _________________ pounds over weight, my __________ were falling out, I was constantly _______ing, and my doctor told me __________________.

Whatever you are doing is wrong, and your health, fitness, well-being, sex appeal, wealth and happiness can only be achieved if you always eat ________ and never eat ___________.

If you do not follow this advice, your eventual death is inevitable.

Lots of fish and organic veggies, small portions of meat, and some eggs and nuts sounds great. But you lost me at carbs. It's my weakness.

Low carb, high bacon diet. ( I too suspect you were low on protein.) How's that saying go? "All things in moderation, including moderation?"
