I can remember, years ago during a high speed descent of Jay Peak VT, at a speed of about 88 KPH, coming around a curve in the road, a crosswind almost blew me into the oncoming traffic lane. After that, I sat up and slowed down

Fortunately most of the wind around here is not that severe, just enough to be annoying.

You guys all need some close passes with trucks and buses. Enough to block the wind momentarily, then let it come back full force.

A few So Cal members did a group ride up the mountain years back. 50 mile gusts but we went anyway. I'm a Clydesadale so I had no problem but one slimmer guy went down like a ton of bricks. I'd say he was about 170. We rolled by a bank then out into the open when a side gust caught him right as he removed his hand from the hb's for some reason. He went down in front of me, almost amazing disbelief. I ended up riding down to get my vehicle to transport him down to meet his family who took him to the hospital. He had some serious injuries.

It was funny. We were going up a steep incline into a strong headwind coming from the left, so speed over ground was really slow, and we were leaning over in the direction we fell, so it wasn't terribly painful, just goofy!

When I was 15 yrs old I was riding on a road I probably shouldnt have been riding on, when a semi dump truck passed me. He was going maybe 35-40mph, I was going maybe 20. Seemed like a long time for him to pass me. And I really had to fight being sucked into his slipstream. He was fighting staying in his lane as cars were coming the other direction. And little to no shoulder and terrible broken pavement. That was intense. Had to really lean and countersteer to keep from being sucked under the trailer/dump.

That reminds me of a time I went for a ride on a FL summer afternoon. I misjudged how far and fast a storm front was approaching and got caught out. I was riding like crazy to get to a park for shelter. A cop on the side of the road was even yelling to me to find cover. In the span of two block the wind gust hit me from three different directions. I made it to the park and found a building (locked unfortunately), but hung out on the lee side from the wind as I watched all sorts of garbage cans and debris fly around me. It was kind of exhilarating.

Never been blown over. I hate riding in the rain. It's it 55F or below I don't wear a helmet. Winter riding you create your own wind chill effect. Lose heat pretty damm quick. But if can see frozen puddles & frozen ground. I got a 100% of a crash, without leaving the neighborhood. If your a hardcore biker. Go ride. I love the cold blue Winter light. Great for outdoor pics. Go ride, But changed a flat in December,. once in South Boston & never wanted to ride in polar conditions ever again. Tough changing flats with 8 numb fingers. cheers ;-))

Not on a bicycle, but on a Goldwing, which weighs almost 900 pounds empty. My wife and I were headed south on I-65 heading for Tennessee and were trying to get ahead of a strong cold front coming in from the west. All of a sudden I had to lean 30 degrees or more to the right to stay in my lane, and I knew that if the wind stopped suddenly we'd be off the road. Decided to pull off at an underpass and wait it out. By the time we decided to continue, there were at least a dozen motorcycles there with us. Sometimes discretion is the wise choice.

That was a trip neither of us will forget. Especially the 100mph run down to the first exit at Lafayette to the closest hotel for the night.

Never blown off my bike but just this year I was descending a popular road cycling hill on a very windy day (50+ gusts) and it was a struggle to hold my line and not be blown over the center divide. I was less buffeted than the other riders with high profile carbon rims.

came super close multiple times cycling az hwy 67 north rim grand canyon one fine late spring day. thank goodness there was nearly zero auto traffic that day.

Yes. When I was young, and living in Orange County, there was a day that the Santa Ana winds were blowing strongly. An apartment block in Anaheim had caught fire, and I decided to ride my bike from my home in Huntington Beach to see it. I took a short cut across the Disneyland parking lot, and as I turned to go toward the West Street exit, a strong gust blew me and my bike right over. I eventually made it to the fire, which was still going strong, and I watched the firefighters working while the news helicopters circled around overhead. At least I had an easy ride home, with the wind pushing me most of the way.
