Zippo 6 hour hand warmers
 

I think i have evolved to final form, and have now mastered winter training . with these 8 dollar on amazon inventions i can ride 6 hours in 20f temps with my feet on fire . who ever invented these things needs the award of the century . no more worthless HOTHANDS nonsenses . just slip these babies under my booties and i cant even belive how warm they stay . they take a small bit of prep to set up but they are a decent option for keeping the cold off your feet .

How do you fit them in your boots or shoe covers?

Yes, $8, if you can find a deal, and you use them over and over again. You fill them with lighter fluid. I have two, and love them.

I used them when I was a kid and my dad would take me ice fishing. Not sure about putting them in boots; if you cut off the air supply they will go out. They work best in pockets.

I hope @Teamprovicycle replies and tells us what he is actually using on his feet and how.

I remember these from years ago. Checked the current models referred to on Amazon. The recommendations aren't great, 12% lowest rating is well beyond my 3-5% limit, more like a crapshoot.

the original was the Jon E warmer. from the '50's? maybe.
Came in a couple different sizes. The big hole was to light your cigarette.

Somewhere I have a similar device made for Hunters that I got back in the mid 70's. I think it was a Jon-e. As I recall, it was kind of a pain to get lit to where it would keep going and had a petroleum smell. Ok to carry around in a pocket to keep your hands warm if you didn't mind the smell.

I think people must not know how to use them properly. I have never had problems with mine. Love them. My dad had one when I was a kid, and I used it back then too. The ones I have were bought in the past four years. The work fine. I use them doing astronomy in the winter, as well as out doing photography, in temps in the teens and below. (Fahrenheit)

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I'll give one (at least ;)) a try. I use the chemical type for pretty much the same activity, more photography stuff. If it goes well, I'll get a second. Nice in one's pockets between shots. :)

I always lit them before going out on the ice or into the wind.

I also used these when I was young and had a paper route. I do not see how they could be used in a shoe or boot. I do remember the smell of lighter fluid when using them. I also remember them being real hot at first and gradually losing the heat.

I have both the zippo style and the chemical packs. I'll take the chemical packs. No need to refuel, no need to light them, they are thinner and fit under shoe covers or in gloves much easier than the zippo handwarmer. They are easy to toss a few in the car or in the saddle pack and leave them there rather than having to keep track of where the handwarmer is.

Tip if you use the chemical packs - tape them onto the edges of the pack to the top of you shoes before you pull the booties on. The tape will hold in place while you slide the bootie on and you can get them right where you want them.

Yeah, I've used both, and still have some of the chemical ones. They are definitely nice, and great when you can buy at a good price. In the Spring, I see them marked down at Dick's, a great time to stock up.

I did the same, I bought one to try after seeing negative reviews. It worked well enough for me to buy another one. Hope you have the same experience.

they use fuel , lighter fluid , i will try the electric ones but they look too big . i made my own booties or covers with wool socks and a survival blanket inbetween , but i can just slip them under through the cleat hole.

yes basicaly resting on my toes outside my cycling shoes under my covers that are home made from wool socks , without the pouches because they seem to lessen the heat .
