Mountain Lion

well
can always fall on a rock and smack the head and then bear hug the kneck
not an encounter i would want. A kid got killed in Rocky Mountain National Park back in 1997 when I lived in Colorado.
my guess is that the Lion will get you from behind and you will never see it until it’s too late

I remember a local trucker killed a savage pit bull with his bare hands too. But he was badly injured during the savage attack. His was a ex-marine or green beret or something.
The Mountain Lion is more similar to the house cat, than to Tigers and Lions. So, it is quite believable that a strong human with only bare hands can defeat a ML in a one-on-one. But typical ML weighs like 100 pounds...so it's not going to be easy...the human probably going to need some luck...and if the ML is good hunter...a human would have little chance.
I doubt an average person could have pulled it off. Most people nowadays are weak from doing no manual work all their lives.

this
is I was told in mountain lion country to put stickers of eyes on the back of your helmet. Lions like to strike from behind.

I used to live there and have spent a lot of time in that park, and never saw a mountain lion - they're pretty shy. Now, rattlesnakes are pretty common around Horsetooth.
At any rate, that person had a great combo of luck and talent!

I am suspicious of the claim of 'killing with bare hands'.... You would be scratched to death before the cat expired.

Next time you see one, take a look at its musculature. There is absolutely no way you would win a battle unless you were very lucky, or very well-armed. They are also ambush predators, so it is unlikely you will see them coming, and they will make sure the fight is on their terms. If one decides to take you down, you are completely screwed.

There is a running tactic of using a light on the back of your head as well as the front at night. Cats don’t like the light. Wonder about off road biking like that?

Almost rode down that canyon. Wildcat canyon in the Berkeley hills. Left of tree in center. Thinking about buying some of those bear hands...

I'm sticking to bike riding after reading this, lol. Kidding but I was cornered by a mountain lionness once who had 3 cubs. Nothing happened but it did make me think whether I wanted to start hiking with something more than just a swiss army knife . . .
The runner showed a lot of presence of mind in being able to fight back but I imagine when the **** hits the fan like that instinct takes over as well.

For most people, the instinct is to run, which is basically inviting almost certain death.
