That Allstate mayhem guy is too mean for me. I don't like watching him tear stuff up.

Yeah, everything is velomobiles. Apparently, the only event people are still doing on unfaired diamond frames is the hour record, which isn't really a good indicator of the maximum speed possible on a diamond-framed bike.

Here's a few typical false flat downhills and other TT bike training ride nonsense fun intervals......
This is a 54T oval ring and normal 11-28 in the back. The one segment I didn't get, downwind, I still hit 40mph but it took about 600w getting up to speed and an avg in the 350's 360's watts. I was already tired by then and didn't start at a good spot.
So, to be clear........the 40mph was downhill, downwind, and using a 54t 11-28 combo at about 110rpm. With pretty good power to get there. It's going to take a recumbent, motorpacing, or a serious descent to hit 50mph.
None of those are things that really interest me, personally. I'm more interested in TT, road, track pursuit, etc........
But, just providing some data........this is a Felt DA TT bike with some roadie 50mm wheels. No skinsuit nor TT helmet, just cold weather roadie kit and helmet.
So.....some data from a Cat 4/5 rider that does some TT stuff......if you're interested.

The guy in the Strava link is holding 32-33mph on flat ground/slight decline for just over a mile, which is very good, and indicative of reality as an unassisted solo rider.
Now recall that the OP claims to have spun out 52-11 for "almost 5km" and it was "too easy." That would be over 40mph, for almost 5 minutes.
If I want those kind of speeds, I'm just going to go to the mountains and have gravity do it. I've averaged 35mph for over half an hour, and only pedaled a few times.
...I mean, it took 2+ hours to get up there first, but hey.

The link is me.
I was farting around with the "new" to me TT build, a 2008 Felt DA. I'm not super strong, but just giving an idea of what your standard local yokel hammer ride racer boy wannabe can do.
I wouldn't run anything bigger than the 54T unless I get my 20min or 10 mile TT power well into the 300's. I'm at about 260 to 270w right now for 10mi TT power.
I wouldn't run a 60T unless I was probably about 350w+. Even then, that's assuming you don't use the 11 or the 12 cogs.
If I was hell bent on doing a flying start 1km time trial (about a minute at 30mph) then I'd probably go with a 60T.
You'd need a pro level leadout squad and a track pursuit bike setup to try for 50mph. Your leadout squad would need to probably put out 600 to 700w for a minute up front before you swing out and go for it.
Even then, in the skis sitting in behind your leadout, you're going to probably need at least 350 to 400w for a minute to keep up with your leadout. Then you'll still need to swing into the 4-digit numbers for the effort.
Have fun and be safe. You'll lose a lot of skin if not.

That's one of the world speed record bikes ridden by José Meiffret.
The fork is reversed for stability at speeds well over 100 MPH.
In this photo he was behind a modified gull wing Mercedes and reached 127 MPH on the autobahn.

Meiffret later became a Cistercian (Trappist) monk.

How about this?
It wouldn't be as sexy, but you'd get the same need for unreasonably high pedaling force with short cranks as with big gears.
70/11 is ~2.5 higher than a middle riding gear, so a crank .4 as long as normal- ~68mm would give a similar workout getting started at a stop sign, etc.
Perhaps it will be a trend- could be called "mini-mashing".

I'm guessing they picked a stretch of road without a right turn or curve.

"In case of fatal accident, I beg of the spectators not to feel sorry for me. I am a poor man, an orphan since the age of eleven, and I have suffered much. Death holds no terror for me. This record attempt is my way of expressing myself. If the doctors can do no more for me, please bury me by the side of the road where I have fallen."
He crashed on the Velodrome at 85 MPH and the newpapers reported that he was dead but he lived.
I just found this. Forget about toe overlap. This guy has chainring overlap.

Most people on here who are shocked about this, and measure up to world records, don't realize that not everyone wants to be a pro cyclist, a world record holder, or famous, and there is always someone better than the best.
I think most people here are stuck in the mindset that cycling is strictly an endurance sport. It is to some degree, but it's not.

And, if one compares a Penny Farthing direct drive to a geared bike, one gets the equivalent of 2:1 gearing.
So, about the equivalent of rolling 42/21.
Talk about spinning.

There are all manner of nusto types on SS and fixed. There are videos of cyclists planking on the saddle on fixies (think all but Superman in flight) flying down mountains on road bikes...passing people pedaling down.

The pictures in this thread make a good argument for final drives. Here's the one on my recumbent trike - this is only 14:18 tooth, but the possibilities are endless (ignore the fact the rear chain is also around an electric motor)...
