Sure; why not? I built a lot of frames wearing this hat:

Get some cotton Walz caps. One of the products they originally made were hats for welders.
Just make sure the hat you get is 100% cotton, including the thread, if you're using it for welding or brazing. Not all of them are... |

This was may favorite commuting hat for years until I lost it on the job in 2011.

I've been wearing a painters hat under my helmet for years. The ones in these posts though are collectors items. Nice!
