Chain probably only looks rusty because of the color of the light. Judging from the shadows, this picture was taken at sunrise or sunset, when the sunlight is red/orange--as is known in the film trade as being "golden hour".

That'd be pretty lame.
Related to the topic, I threw a chain off this morning....seems my derailleur was off a bit. That'll wake you up.
But it didn't break.

You make the chain break sound exciting. When I broke one mountain biking, I just rolled to a stop. I didn't have the repair tool so just coasted down to the car. The quick link I had already ordered arrived a couple of days later.

It's really only exciting if you have coaster brakes on a hill.

I broke a chain once, starting from a dead stop in my 44/15. Power foot came off the pedal as it spun around to the bottom and down I went, right in front of a little old lady waiting for a bus. I was only a half-mile from my office, so I stuffed the chain in my jacket pocket and draised myself the rest of the way to work.
One other time, I was on my lowracer, running the return side of the chain 'up' so that the chain crossed itself twice. On a 40 mph downhill, the two sides slapped perfectly and undid the master link. 11 feet of chain stripped off the bike, lying in the road like a snake. I never found that master link but luckily I carried a spare.

I've occasionally broken a chain, but so far never with 11-speed.
In fact, my 11-speed chain broke my chain tool.

When I first started using chains with quick links a couple of them came apart. One incident was harmless, it came apart and I just pedaled it off the chain ring. The other one was bad - I was in traffic and threw all my weight on the crank to get going and I went over the bars. Bent a set of Cinelli 66 bars.

I have always carried a chain tool and spare links. I didn't own, need or want a car for many years so I wore out a few chains to the point of breakage. I have a belt now so the chain tool sits in my sons handlebar back.

Ok, I guess I'll ask. What's hard railing a curb? Sounds like something you'd do on a skateboard.

No bent plates? ... I smell a troll too...
That chain won't take a modern quick link, it's bushing'd.

I thought it was a belt drive for a second, those are some long shadows. I have never broken a chain before, but not for lack of trying.
Were you shifting when the chain broke, or just powering along? City riding is great, probably the closest thing to combat any of us will ever experience. When done with just the right level of animal aggression, you don't even need to think, just react.
Curious though, did you just leave the chain in the street? That would have been the macho thing to do.

It's tough out here. The turf ain't jest fer bikes. It's fer fights.

I'm not really sure if it was at the master link or not. I just pulled the chain off of one of the parts bikes, and thrown it on the one. It's back on the road. Easy does it.
