2017 TREK 920 Wheelset Replacement

I want to upgrade the stock wheelset on my 2017 Trek 920 for more strength and reliability . Does anyone have experience doing this ? I was thinking 36 H spoke count front and rear as I am 205 lbs and carry 60 pounds of gear.

Welcome to BF! Do you ride the Katy? 36H sounds like a good plan.

Never done the Katy. Am currently planning a short trip on the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island. I want to outfit the 920 with a hearty wheelset as I am pretty hard on rims and spokes and was wondering what rims /hubs/spokes people used. I have also heard that thru axles may be hard to find in a 36 H and was hoping for more info.

What size wheels are they?

If you can fit standard 29er wheels, I recommend Mavic Crossmax Elites which run around $600. Bulletproof reliability, all parts are replaceable and the wheels can be cheaply serviced by any shop.

Yes 29er , Thanks for the reply. The Crossmax Elite look like good value for the money as they are on sale right now at my lbs but I would like a higher spoke count due to loading on the bike and longevity of the rim. 205 lb rider plus gear equals broken spokes eventually. I have 142mm-12 mm and 100mm-15mm both front and rear are thru axles.
