If you are doing this indoors I highly recommend the double-boil method using whatever electric heating mechanism you have at hand. I would avoid using open flame even when double-boiling. If you are outdoors, have at it with the open flame if you are feeling lucky. With a turkey fryer and 30 pounds of wax you could wax enough chains to last the rest of your life - if you survive the waxing process.

Re: the type of wax - there are a huge number of opinions about what works best. I am starting to think that it may not matter what type of solid wax product you use - you can probably get 300-500 miles out of any of them. I tried Toko alpine ski wax recently and it is looking good after 100 miles.

The key is to have a convenient and safe waxing method - and use quick-links to make chain removal/installation easy.

THIS is the deal:
Fillet of a fenny snake, In the cauldron boil and bake; Eye of newt and toe of frog, Wool of bat and tongue of dog, Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting, Lizard's leg and owlet's wing, For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

What's it called when people use it on their bicycle chain?

...not so sure about this....

I consulted the local coven at their Tuesday night meeting and they said that the eye of newt you get these days just isn't what it used to be. They suggested substituting alpine ski wax.

Florida is pretty wet and I've been caught in some pretty good storms while riding. I was using ProGold wet lube on my chain but it doesn't really hold up that well in heavy rain, like we get here. A friend of mine, who happens to be a pro cyclist, told me about Squirt. It's what she and her team use and is great for both wet and dry conditions. It's a wax based, dry lube that holds up extremely well in the rain and much easier to use and faster to apply than dipping.

While it won't change the minds of the diehard dippers, it should be worth considering if you are wanting to start using a wax based lubricant. My current, 4 oz bottle that I purchased in October of last year is about half full and cost me around $12.00 on Amazon. I may have to apply it a little sooner than if I dipped my chain, but it sure beats the time it takes to melt the wax and dip a chain. And it's less money than buying a crock pot and the wax.

I have a bottle of Squirt on hand for "touch ups." It works great in conjunction with hot wax. I absolutely do not like it on it's own, Squirt invariably causes a chunky gray buildup around the jockey wheels.

As I mentioned earlier, I did go ahead and drop a puck of Mr. Zogs Sex Wax (Cold Water Formula) in my crockpot, and now have about 100 miles on that chain. Fine so far, though a hundred miles won't really tell much. I was getting 400-500 pre-Zogs with the paraffin+Slick50 blend, so we'll see. If anything, the Mr. Zogs made the final wax a bit softer and therefore less flaky-- could help with longevity. Also smells of coconut, which is just a free bonus.

I have 6 more pucks of cold water and a couple warm water, so if it works, awesome.

.
I had the same experience with White Lightning liquid lube. That's why I started chain waxing - almost zero gunk and much longer time between lube applications.
